Featured Feline: Carmen
Carmen came into our care as a stray in November 2011, and we would really like to find this sweet girl a home! Carmen would rather snuggle in your lap than be picked up. She welcomes you with a nudge of her head, asking to be petted. If you have treats in hand, she is the first to ask for some! Carmen is very curious and likes to sniff new items in her territory. Getting brushed may be one of her favorite things to do. Carmen is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so you can bring her home for only $45!

Compatible Canine: Ulricka
Originally a stray, when Ulricka transferred into our care in mid-October, she had some wounds on her back. The wounds have all healed, but she still has some scars that are now covered by fur. Ulricka is a very sweet girl who loves to play, so a fenced-in backyard (and some kids to go with it!) would help her burn off some of her excess energy. Ulricka gets along with other dogs and cats (and kids!), so stop in and meet this affectionate girl today! |

Greetings!
As we enter December, many of us here at Cedar Valley Humane Society are already turning our thoughts to 2013.
One of the many things we are looking forward to is our fourth annual Whine & Wags Auction on March 8. We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting this year's event at the Cedar Rapids Marriott, and it's sure to be a great time...all for a worthy cause!
This year, Whine & Wags will feature a variety of silent auction items as well as a LIVE auction, in addition to the hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and live music. There are many ways to get involved (besides attending!), such as donating items for the auction, underwriting the event, and advertising your business in the auction program.
Whine & Wags is our largest fundraiser of the year, and as with all our other programs and events, we would not able to achieve our goals without the help of volunteers. If you would like to contribute your time and talents, be sure to let us know!
You can help us make a positive, lasting difference in the life of an animal.

Only Two Days Left to Adopt a Senior Pet at a Reduced Rate
In honor of November being Adopt a Senior Pet Month, we have reduced the adoption fee for cats in the Silver Paws Club to $45. (That's half the standard adoption fee!) The Silver Paws Club, our club exclusively for adoptable animals more than seven years old, still has more than a half dozen members, including one dog. Welcoming a senior pet into your heart makes a huge difference in a pet's life. Some of these animals are now separated from the only owner they have ever known. Other animals may have been shuttled around from place to place, never really knowing the love of a stable family. Whatever their individual situation is, they all have plenty of unconditional love to give. Just one look in their eyes, and you know they will be forever grateful! So come meet a member of our Silver Paws Club. Get ready to fall in love...we guarantee it will be the most fulfilling thing you ever do! |

Join Us for Our Holiday Open House
We'll be serving up coffee, cookies, and other holiday yummies at our Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 9, from 2 to 5pm. Once again, award-winning caricaturist Kira Layli will be creating fun and unique caricatures throughout the event. Bring your kiddos (the two-legged and four-legged kind) and let Kira create an awesome, personalized holiday gift for your family. She can also draw from hard-copy photos if the kid-and-pet wrangling is too stressful. (Please no photographs on mobile devices, though! The small screens make it difficult to draw.) A black-and-white or color caricature will set you back just $10. This year, there will be a limit of one caricature per sitting. (If the schedule permits, we'll be happy to let you have a second sitting.) Be sure to visit our adoptable animals to see if there's one you'd like to bring into your home! Our adoption counselors will be happy to assist you in finding the perfect fit for your family. It's the feel-good event of the season...and a perfect way to pick up a one-of-a-kind gift! (And if you have a little extra jingle in your pocket, you can drop some coin in our donation box. We guarantee you our shelter sweeties are on Santa's "nice" list!) |

Ramping Up for Whine & Wags
We know...we know... it seems a long way off, but Whine & Wags will be here before you know it! We are currently seeking individuals, business owners, and corporate underwriters who would like to contribute to our largest fundraiser of the year! Underwriting is a great way to get involved in Whine & Wags. Underwriting donations help pay the costs of the event and allow the money raised through ticket and auction sales to go directly to helping the animals. Underwriting includes two complimentary tickets to the event. There are several levels at which you can participate, from $150 to $3,000+. We're always looking for new fun and exciting auction items. Donating items is a great way to help the animals! Items can be pet-oriented, but they don't have to be. (Some of our biggest draws are sports-related, like Hawkeye tickets and autographed memorabilia.) Donated items are tax deductible, and your generosity will be acknowledged in the auction program if you would like. You can also advertise your business in the auction program. The cost for promoting your business is very reasonable, from $100 for a quarter page ad to $300 for a full page. It's a great way to reach pet lovers who support our cause! Volunteering is a wonderful way to become involved! It takes a lot of work to plan and produce Whine & Wags each year, and we can always use help gathering auction items, setting up the auction display, greeting and registering guests, monitoring the auction table, and more! To learn more about underwriting, donating items, or advertising in the program, contact Bernie Lettington at bernie.lettington@cvhumane.org. To find out how you can volunteer, contact our volunteer coordinator, Wendy El-Hussein, at wendy.elhussein@cvhumane.org. With your help, Whine & Wags 2013 will be more successful than ever! |

We Asked, You Answered!
If your pet had a magic wand (along with opposable thumbs!) and could change one thing about YOU, what do you think it would be?
Robyn Cox: Mine would wish I allowed them to free feed instead of measuring out meals, and to have all the unhealthy treats (doggie junk food) filled with additives and preservatives that they want!
Angie Blackbourn Handeland: That I would let her sleep on my head every night because that's obviously the most comfortable spot in the house.
Amy Wright Dolley: Mine would want me home all day, with unlimited snackies, kisses, and play time!
Sharon E. Konchar: That I would stay home all day, go for a run together AND then let her chase all the wild critters that taunt her from outside the window!
Grace Calvert: That I would encourage him to scratch on our new furniture.

Volunteer Spotlight: Susan Teachout
Susan Teachout has been an outstanding volunteer for almost two years now.
When we say, "Help!" Susan says, "When and where?" She is always willing to pitch in when we are shorthanded, whether it's cleaning kennels or helping at events. Most recently, Susan took the lead at one of the Theisen's Dog-O-Ween contests. She was the go-to person for volunteer activities, including running the bake sale and working with the shelter dogs.
Susan's bubbly personality makes it fun to volunteer with her! She's just one of those people that other people love to be around. Thanks, Susan, for sharing your talents with us and our precious shelter sweeties! |

Happy Tail: Kenzi Enjoys her Retirement
In November 2010, we adopted Kenzi, a black and white Cavalier/Cocker mix, from the Cedar Valley Humane Society. She was very timid and protective and obviously had produced multiple litters of puppies.
After being spayed and having some other minor surgery, Kenzi was as good as new!
Kenzi spends her days in a very low-stress environment. She loves her sister Sophie, also a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and her adopted family. Kenzi is an excellent walker, a good listener, and she guards the front door with a passion when people come to visit. (We're still working on that!) All in all, she has been a real joy to have around!
Thank you, Cedar Valley Humane Society, for enriching our home with this wonderful little fuzzball!
Rick M.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
