Featured Feline: Toonies
Toonies came to us at the beginning of June because her owner was moving and couldn't keep her. She comes from an active household with dogs and other cats, but she might prefer her new home to be a little quieter. (She would probably prefer to be the only animal as well!) This friendly girl can be frightened of loud noises. She loves to be held and petted, and she is front declawed. Because Toonies is an older cat, during November, she can be adopted for only $45. Stop in and meet her!

Compatible Canine: Chase
Chase came to us at the end of August as a stray. He is a very excitable, high-energy dog. Chase still jumps and will need some basic obedience training. Chase is more than happy to tell you he loves you with his wet kisses. He does like his toys and will take them nicely from your hand. We think he would do really well with positive reinforcement as he has made it clear he loves his treats and will try his hardest to do what you want for it. Chase is a member of our exclusive Lonely Hearts Club, so he can be adopted for the reduced fee of $75. |

Greetings!
Please pardon our mess!
If you've recently visited us at the shelter, you know what I'm talking about. Crews have been using large machinery to dig and trench extensive portions of our property to the west and north of our parking lot.
One of our aging, inadequate septic tanks required replacing, and it has turned out to be a major project. The good news is we now have a larger, updated system that will be able to handle both our present needs and our future growth.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during the construction. If you have beloved pets resting in our cemetery, please be assured that no graves were disturbed, and we are continuing to provide cemetery services. We will restore landscaping to the affected area as soon as we can.

Adopt a Senior Pet Month
November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month! The Silver Paws Club, our club exclusively for adoptable animals more than seven years old, now has almost a dozen members. In honor of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, we have reduced the adoption fee for Silver Paws cats to $45. (That's half the standard adoption fee!) Silver Paws dogs may be adopted for only $75. Welcoming a senior pet into your heart makes a huge difference in a pet's life. Some of these animals are now separated from the only owner they have ever known. Other animals may have been shuttled around from place to place, never really knowing the love of a stable family. Whatever their individual situation is, they all have plenty of unconditional love to give. Just one look in their eyes, and you know they will be forever grateful! So come meet a member of our Silver Paws Club. Get ready to fall in love...we guarantee it will be the most fulfilling thing you ever do! |

We Asked, You Answered!
If you had a magic wand and could change one thing about your pet, what would it be?
Tim Kitzman: That my best buddy could get along with other dogs so we could adopt another dog.
Diane Yeager: For their lives to last as long as mine. I LOVE my four dogs, five cats, and guinea pig with ALL my heart. They are my confidants, my family, and, above all else, my friends. I would do ANYTHING for them.
Mallory Asche: Cooper- end his shedding ways. Emme- fix her juvenile cataracts. Hunter- bring my sweet baby back from the Rainbow Bridge.
Rose Kern Dougan: All cats to use the toilet (OK, maybe dogs too) and make dogs talk (cats would be too sassy.) ;)
Danyel Kolek: Please stop feasting on poopy diapers and Kleenex!
R'becca Groff: That she could once again be more trusting of other people, besides just me and my husband. Her social skills were damaged long ago we fear, but we are very grateful she has come to love and trust us with all her heart.
Chris Turkovich: Remove his couch-destroying superpower.

Volunteer Spotlight: Phyllis Griswold and Gretchen Sealls
Phyllis Griswold and Gretchen Sealls have been a huge help to us for more than two years now.
Gretchen and Phyllis are very generous with their time, talents, and connections. They make monthly pet therapy visits, assist the animal care staff with cleaning cat condos several days a month, and help clean our space at PetSmart. In addition, they have helped sort and organize items in the house next to the shelter. Recently, they took the initiative to line up shredding services for records we no longer needed to keep, and then they saw that project through from beginning to end!
Thank you so much, ladies! Your proactive approach is exactly what we need. We cannot thank you enough for everything you do to help the staff and our furry kiddos, each and every week. |

Happy Tail: Wonderful, Goofy Rascal Flourishes in Forever Home
The first time I met Rascal was last December during the Cedar Valley Humane Society's Holiday Open House. He was paralyzed with fear but remained calm and gentle. I subsequently discovered that he was abandoned, "rescued" by people who had tied him outside where he contracted heartworm. They then turned him over to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
Rascal had become a special-needs dog due to his fearfulness and disease. The Cedar Valley Humane Society staff worked with him for several months as he recovered from his fears and received critical heartworm treatment.
I monitored Rascal's progress during this time, and in March I had the opportunity to meet him again and potentially adopt him. What a change! He looked so happy running around the courtyard and visiting with the staff that cared for him. After a few moments, he let me pet him. During this visit, Rascal met my elderly Lab, Walter (also a CVHS alumnus), and interacted quite well, demonstrating respect for the older dog. I decided then and there that this wonderful, goofy dog deserved a forever home, and Rascal became part of my family.
Ever since that night, Rascal has flourished! I took advantage of the Pawsitively Paws free consultation that was provided with his adoption paperwork. Their advice was invaluable, and I highly recommend that everyone take advantage of this training and dog behavior assistance. Each week, Rascal makes additional strides forward. He has been on a road trip to downtown Chicago, playing well with others on the Chicago dog beach. He conquered the elevated dog walk at dog agility class, and he now meets most people without fear. He loves to play ball with kids and does somersaults in the grass when especially happy.
I cannot thank the folks at the Cedar Valley Humane Society enough for saving Rascal's life, especially the staff that worked with him for months and those who provided the resources for his heartworm treatment. This organization truly cares about doing right for the animals and people of Linn County.
I understand that he was the first of many dogs who became part of the Cedar Valley Humane Society "office dog" program, and I am sure the staff has many more Rascal stories. I cannot imagine my life without Rascal, who now has a loving home, care, and protection for the rest of his life while providing joy for mine.
Annette H.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!

Cats are the ultimate narcissists. You can tell this by all the time they spend on personal grooming. Dogs aren't like this. A dog's idea of personal grooming is to roll in a dead fish. -James Gorman |
