Featured Feline:
Jewel

Jewel
Jewel came to us at the end of June because her owner was moving. This older cat can be very shy when you first meet her. Because of her timid personality, Jewel would do best in a quiet home. Her favorite thing to do is to cuddle up beneath a blanket. When she knows you are near, she will meow a couple of times to let you know where she is hiding (kind of like hide and seek). Jewel would make a great snuggle buddy for the right person! (And since she is considered a senior cat, her adoption fee is only $45 during the month of November.)

Rambler

Rambler
Rambler transferred into our care in the middle of August. He is a little shy at first, but once he gets to know your voice, you have his full attention! Rambler is a gentle dog who doesn't like to play too rough. He does enjoy a good rubdown. (He will turn in circles to let you know he loves it!) Rambler is a laidback guy who would love to follow you around all day. He is also a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so you can adopt him for only $75. Stop in and meet this sweet guy today!

Greetings!

Chuck with AnnieAre you ready to make a lifetime commitment to a new pet?

There are many factors to keep in mind. Perhaps the most important one is that dogs and cats may live 15 years or more, so be sure to ask yourself: Am I ready to provide a lifelong home?

Some other things to think about: All dogs and cats making the transition to a new home will need time to adjust to a new family. They may require housetraining and behavior training. You also should consider whether or not other members of your household agree to having a pet in the home. Addressing family members' concerns before you bring an animal home will make the transition much smoother.

Other considerations: Does anyone have allergies? Are other members of the household willing to help care for the pet? Can you afford veterinary care? How will you introduce your new pet to pets you currently have?

With forethought and preparation, you can help ensure that having a new pet in your home will be a wonderful and enduring experience. And if you need further guidance, our adoption counselors are available to help you find the right fit for your family.

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
What is your pet's favorite toy...and what does he or she do with it?

Tiff Roberts: His rubber ball. He will only play with it by himself. He bats it around like a cat.

Amy Overbey: Our kitty Bella loves balls of yarn. She likes taking them out of my sewing basket and bringing them downstairs to us. Our kitty Bristol loves playing fetch with his sparkly pom pom balls. We frequently find them in bed with us in the morning because he brought them to us to play.

Heather Rios: Anything squeaky. They will take it on the couch and throw it off the couch just to run after it.

Heidi Dengler-Elliott: Chewing the lids off of Powerade bottles.... Once she succeeds she leaves it and goes to the next one.

Collette Darden: GREEN fur mice. She throws them up in the air and chases them.

Volunteer Spotlight: Andrew Waters

A hearty salute to Andrew Waters of Boy Scout Troop 766!

Andrew, his family members, and a hardworking crew from Troop 766 completely overhauled the trails behind our shelter for Andrew's Eagle Scout project.
 Andrew Waters and his crew
Before the Scouts came out, Andrew, his grandfathers, and his parents used chainsaws to prep the area: widening trails, creating a new trail, clearing brush and removing dead and dangerous trees.

The weekend of the project, Andrew's crew consisted of 21 volunteers each day. Under Andrew's direction, an adult volunteer opened up two more trails with a skid loader. Scouts and other volunteers edged the trails with branches, spread mulch, chipped wood from the wood pile, cleaned trash from the woods, and made sure the trails were clear of hanging branches.

Serenity Tree Service and Dick's Tree Service donated nearly $1,500 of mulch and delivered it at no charge. Home Depot donated the wood chipper rental, and Star Rental donated the use of a skid loader. Altogether, $2,170 of materials and rentals were donated to complete the project.

The original trail was a narrow 1,000-foot long footpath. Now, approximately 180 cubic yards of mulch cover a massive 2,000 feet of trails! The trails are wide enough that two dogs can pass each other without being crowded. And with all the extra trails, dogs won't be bored by the same old sights and smells!

As if all this weren't enough, Andrew is planning to build some benches to be placed along the trail and possibly some path markers or signs. So far, 378.5 hours have been spent on the project. After the benches and signs are complete, the project will have taken more than 400 hours to complete.

Andrew, we cannot thank you enough! You and the Boy Scouts and other volunteers from Troop 766 have done so much to enrich the lives of dogs in our care, now and in the future. This was a HUGE project that will have a lasting positive impact!

Happy Tail: The Brady Bunch's Greg (now Max) is Wonderful Family Member

In 2010, we gave our family dog to my mother. She lives alone, and he's the perfect size for her. We knew they'd provide each other with constant companionship and love.

Although we still see him often, our family missed having a dog of our own. In December 2011, I saw a Tail Waggin' Wednesday story on TV, featuring one of six puppies. They were three months old and dubbed the Brady Bunch group, as each of them had a name from the famed TV show.

That weekend, my husband and I drove to the shelter to check them out. By the time we got there, all but one puppy had "Pending Adoption" posted on the kennel. We quickly filled out the application for the remaining pup, only to turn it in and be told someone had just turned theirs in right before us. We were told we'd be a backup, in case something fell through on any application turned in before us. We went home not expecting a call. They were all adorable, and puppies get adopted quickly when they are available.

The following Monday, we received a call that Greg was available if we were still interested. What a blessing...of course we said "YES!"

On December 16, 2011, we picked Greg up from the shelter. He was SO fuzzy, and very shy. The children immediately loved him and fought over who would get to hold him on the way home. After some debate we all agreed to name him Max. He's now a year old. He's smart, loving, playful, and protective, and we couldn't be happier to have him in our family.

Thank you Cedar Valley Humane Society for blessing our home with a wonderful family member!

Much love,

The West Family

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
