RECIPES WANTED!
10th Anniversary Cookbook
Recipes Wanted! It's hard to believe that next year will mark 10 years since the CSA began at Rushton Farm. What a wonderful journey it has been. A cookbook is in the works to help celebrate the occasion. We have many recipes in our coffers but would like to have CSA members share a favorite recipe or two. Recipes that use the fruit or vegetables found in our shares are preferred. Please email recipes to Allyson McTear at amctear@verizon.net or place hard copies in the folder in the farmshed by September 2nd. Many thanks and stay tuned for cookbook updates.

IN THE BAG Tidbits from the staff
Sharing the Bounty
It is that time of year when the heat and rain reward us with a hefty bounty of vegetables in the field. The tomato plants that have been heavy with green fruit are now turning red. Just two weeks ago it was a single tomato in the share. This week it will be 7 or 8 lbs. Other crops are performing as well. The zucchini and cucumbers continue to produce and the pepper plants, eggplant and melons are coming on strong. Look for large shares as the summer heat pushes things along.
I would like to remind our members that anytime there is an item you don't want or there is too much of an item, feel free to leave it and it will be donated to a local food bank. One of the key components of Rushton Farm and the WCT Community Farm Program is the Share the Bounty Program. The Share the Bounty Program was established to demonstrate how small farms can make a significant difference by donating a portion of their harvest to local food shelters.
Starting with the first growing season in 2008 it was decided that Rushton Farm would donate at least 10% of all food harvested to those in need. The farm does this in three different ways; donating extra produce, growing specifically for donation and gleaning. These donations go primarily to the West Chester Food Cupboard and the Chester County Food Bank.
In the eight years since Rushton Farm was established over 20,000 lbs of food has been donated to area food shelters through the Share the Bounty Program. Hundreds of volunteers have helped to make this possible and each year more volunteers become involved. It is a great way to learn about land protection, sustainable agriculture and the value of food donation. If you want more information on the Share the Bounty Program please contact me at cfd@wctrust.org.

THE DIRT Notes from the field
With this summer heat the Rushton Farm Staff is adjusting some work times to avoid the lawsuits associated with employees collapsing in the field. I'm kidding- we have an incredible staff and I genuinely want to avoid any cases of heat stroke. I also don't want to cause any international incidents involving a certain French student working in harsh conditions (of course he keeps insisting he wants more work- that should stop after this week!)
It has been a few years since the 90 degree morning when I was accused of "sleeping" in the tomato rows (true story and I wasn't asleep- not on that day anyway) and I would like to make sure no one else is caught "sleeping" in the field due to heat stroke. Because of this there may be some longer lunch breaks in the middle of the day and the farm may be closed early on non-pick up days if the heat tops 95 or the humidity is unbearable. If there is ever a need to contact us and no one is on the farm please feel free to text or call me (Fred) at 610-203-3673.
Stay cool and keep hydrated!
