IN THE BAG tidbits from Fred

Running Ragged over Rutabaga's

This is obviously the "late" edition of The Wild Carrot due to some very unusual conditions at Rushton Farm. In what has been a very fruitful season we are seeing our late fall crops take their sweet time coming to maturity. This time of year vegetables can grow rapidly or not at all depending on weather and field conditions. It was not until 8 yesterday morning that we realized three crops we did not expect to mature at all had reached acceptable size and were ready to be picked.

The fall radishes, broccoli and rutabagas came just in time. Adding three crops to a full harvest list that includes carrots, leeks, celeriac and braising greens is obviously time consuming and we just made 2 o'clock pick up. We are expecting a harrowing Halloween Harvest for Friday's final official pickup of the season.

While we were blessed to have  extra veggies for the last official week of pick up we are still nurturing a few brasicas. While pickups officially end this week we want to be able to share the late harvest with our  members. The cabbage and Brussels sprouts, along with leeks, sweet potatoes, potatoes, winter squash and onions will be ready for our special Thanksgiving pickup Tuesday, November 18 and Friday, November 21 from 2-6. Usually we finish up the season the first week in November but with the season running late it gives us an opportunity to share the last harvest of the season just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

While we take the next two weeks off to catch up on winter field prep we will be sending out information about membership for 2015 along with a survey to help us know what we are doing right and what we can improve on. We value every Rushton Farm CSA member and Rushton is as much yours as it is ours. So look for more information over the next two weeks and we will see you November 18th and November 21st.
