Stop by the bird banding station to observe beautiful songbirds as they migrate south for the winter!  Data collected contributes to bird conservation and allows us to track the species using our special preserve and farm.

No registration required.

Young Birder Songbird Banding Open House
Saturday, September 20th from 9:30am-11am
Rushton Woods Preserve and Farm

Junior Birders are invited to watch fall songbird banding and learn all about the wonders (and perils) of migration!  They'll learn about why the habitat Rushton offers is so important for their survival this time of year.  Kids will gain an understanding of migration from close observation of the birds up-close as well as from an experienced storyteller!

Please sign up by emailing Blake Goll at bhg@wctrust.org

What You Missed in August

Mothing Party
Junior Birders had fun learning about all the beautiful moth species we have at Rushton Farm through a wonderful talk by Sheryl Johnson, a long-time mothing enthusiast!  She even had a big, live Polyphemus moth to show as well as a magnificent Luna moth specimen.  Our moth bait worked well attracting some hungry moths and other insects to the trees, and the lights attracted even more species!

Ashbridge Adventure

Also in August, we had our first annual Ashbridge Adventure during which we did some birding and studied the stream; the best bird sighting was a Red-tailed Hawk soaring low while being mobbed by crows, and in the stream our best find was a large aquatic dragonfly larvae!  We enjoyed the beauty of and learned the names of several native wildflowers including Joe pyeweed, goldenrod, ironweed, and Queen-anne's lace.  We played hide-n-seek among the trees and even built toad abodes in teams, which we then toured and also "tested" on an actual toad we found. Man, did we have fun! The toad, on the other hand, couldn't wait for us to leave

Thanks for your interest in Willistown Conservation Trust's Junior Birding Club, a chapter of PA Young Birders. Studies have shown that regular experience with nature makes kids healthier, happier and significantly improves their performance in all school subjects. Getting your child involved with PA Young Birders is a wise choice that makes positive waves in your child's future.

Our Mission is to develop a culture of caring

for the natural world and desire to conserve

land, by providing meaningful, thought provoking

experiences with nature, especially birds.

Our Objectives for Your Child:

  • Connect intimately to nature in order to foster a lasting love of the natural world.
  • Nurture a spirit of discovery and wonder.
  • Refine birding abilities and cultivate a wholesome lifelong hobby.
  • Develop science skills and understanding
  • of the scope of science.
  • Create a confident conservation ethic by demonstrating the importance of preserving open space.
  • Recognize the interconnectedness of habitat, birds and other wildlife.
  • Ensure an ultimate understanding of the positive role humans can play in the natural world

Programs are free unless otherwise noted (although donations are always appreciated), and kids are only expected to bring a desire to learn about birds and explore nature as well as hiking shoes and clothes they don't mind getting dirty!  Binoculars are a plus, but we always have a few on hand to borrow.  All programs are appropriate for kids ages 8-12, but most are adaptable for younger or older kids as well; just ask me if you are concerned about the age appropriateness of a program.
