IN THE BAG tidbits from Fred

Harvest Celebration

The harvest moon lit up the sky last night and the autumn equinox is fast approaching. As our weekly harvest turns from summer vegetables to fall crops we are starting to plan our celebration to recognize the bounty we have gathered from the fields this season.

On October 25th Rushton Farm will be the site for the seventh annual Harvest Celebration. It is a chance to gather at the farm and bid a fond farewell to the 2014 season. There will be pumpkin carving and hayrides followed by a bonfire and toasted marshmallows. At dusk Great Valley Nature will be exhibiting some of our favorite feathered friends with their magnificent owls. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic and a blanket. Mulled cider and local beer will be provided.

The Harvest Celebration continues to be a huge success and will sell out quickly so advance registration is highly recommended.  CSA Members have this week and next to register before tickets go on sale to the public. The Celebration is Saturday, October 25th from 5-8.   Hope to see you there!

Please register and pay at pick up, by phone (610.353.2562) or by mail: Harvest Celebration, Willistown Conservation Trust, 925 Providence Rd., Newtown Square PA 19073. Prices for CSA members are $15 for adults, and $10 for children - maximum of 5 tickets per CSA family. If you need additional tickets, you may purchase them online at wctrust.org when they go on sale to the public on September 22.

Food and Feathers at the Farm!

Rushton Farm CSA members will have an opportunity to see Willistown Conservation Trust's bird banding program this Saturday.   Come on out and watch our banders collect migratory birds at Rushton Farm, band them and release them to feed from the fields before their long journey south. Our feathered friends will be on display this Saturday from dawn to 11. Parking will be at the farm and there will be signs to the banding station located in the hedgerow by the south crop fields.

THE DIRT notes from the field

Through the course of the season a farmer sees a lot of unusual things. Many times the unusual appears in the very vegetables being harvested. Issues with flower pollination, weather and soil can cause everything from "tripod" carrots to conjoined eggplant. These vegetables are often discarded by market farmers as unsellable but at Rushton we offer them as part of the share. If they are not selected at pick up then they are donated to the food bank.

This past year the French supermarket chain Intermarche launched a campaign to celebrate the "inglorious fruits and vegetables" that go to waste each day. It is a film, print, poster and radio campaign, celebrating the beauty of the Grotesque Apple, the Ridiculous Potato, the Hideous Orange, the Failed Lemon, the Disfigured Eggplant, the Ugly Carrot, and the Unfortunate Clementine. It is a great approach to preventing food waste and one we can all learn from. Click here to see the campaign!

RECIPES what to do with all those veggies

We have started harvesting the winter squash which means fall is almost here. Our first squash is the spaghetti squash. It is delicious and easy to prepare. A little butter or a sauce made with Rushton tomatoes is the perfect complement to this simple vegetable.

Spaghetti Squash

 Ingredients

1     spaghetti squash (2 pounds), halved and seeded

3     tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

1     tablespoon lemon juice

1/2  cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

1/2  teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1      tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Drizzle squash flesh with 2 tablespoons olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place cut side down on a parchment-lined rimmed baking sheet. Roast until squash is tender when pierced with a knife, about 1 hour.

2. When cool enough to handle, gently scrape squash with a fork to remove flesh in long strands and transfer to a medium bowl. Toss with remaining 1 tablespoon oil, lemon juice, and parsley. Season with salt and red-pepper flakes and serve sprinkled with cheese or tomato sauce if desired.
