Since it was first documented in New York in 2006, White Nose Syndrome has killed millions of insect-eating bats in 22 states across the northeast, including Pennsylvania. Bats are amazing creatures, and they provide an economic value to US agriculture of about $22.9 billion/year. One Little Brown Bat in your backyard can eat up to 1,000 mosquitos in an hour!
If you have a colony of bats near your home, you can help efforts to save these important little creatures. The PA Game Commission's Appalachian Bat Count asks that you count bats as they exit their summer roost at dusk in June, then again later in the summer to see how the colony has grown as pups begin flying. Visit the PAGC website to learn more about how you can participate in the counting efforts.
Contact Blake at bhg@wctrust.org if you would like assistance monitoring your bat colony - we'd be happy to help and would love to include it as a Junior Birding Club activity.
