Did You Know?
This baby bird's survival depends upon low-growing, shrubby vegetation.
photo of adorable baby Tufted Titmouse Important "scrub-shrub" areas are comprised of shrubs, young trees and grasses and are often seen in hedgerows or fields several years after we stop mowing them.

Wild, brambly, tangled, and yes, a bit unkempt, these scrub-shrub areas provide incredibly important habitat for our local birds, especially young birds seeking cover during their vulnerable first year of life.

Once we better understand the remarkable ecological value of these areas, few features of the Willistown landscape will compare in importance.

It takes years for nature to create these low-growing shrubby areas, a habitat rich in food sources and cover for young birds and other wildlife...

...and just minutes for a machine to destroy it, leaving an ecologic wasteland and disturbed site in its wake.

Be Part of the Movement!
Dense and impenetrable, scrub-shrub habitat is often under-valued by people, and therefore, frequently removed.

With funding from a National Audubon/Toyota "TogetherGreen" Innovation Grant received with our partners at Valley Forge Audubon and Audubon PA, we will demonstrate the importance of scrub-shrub habitat through educational workdays, birdwalks and other events at three local habitat demonstration areas through June, 2013. The project will involve community volunteers as well as students from The Achievement Project ("TAP") in Chester and the Charles A. Melton Arts & Education Center in West Chester.

Calling All Volunteers!
The first two of these events will be held at Rushton Woods Preserve in November  where you can experience firsthand the beauty and function of these areas and help us develop our first scrub-shrub demonstration area with TAP and Melton Center students.
