CSIFT Scholarships Funds Support U of I Teaching Assistantship

Students at the University of Illinois have been refining their R&D skills in their capstone course, Product Development, with the help of Teaching Assistant Candice Mazewski. Candice is a first year Masters student at U of I and was one of three Product Development Teaching Assistants under Professor Dr. Dawn Bohn.
The Chicago Section was vital in helping Candice pursue her graduate degree, by providing the funding for the Teaching Assistantship. This funding has enabled Candice to solely focus on her research and classwork at the University. Teaching Assistantships provide more than just funding, they create opportunities for graduate students to develop as teachers and leaders in our field.

Long Range Plan 60-Second Survey - Interns Anyone?

The Chicago Section IFT is investigating options whereby to facilitate the hiring of food science-related interns by Chicago-area food manufacturing, ingredient suppliers and related companies and organizations. Typically, this would involve students entering their Junior Year in College and up.
Internships provide multiple benefits for food companies: they can fill in labor gaps during the summer vacation months; they offer companies opportunities to evaluate prospective employees prior to job offers being made; and they open up pipelines to technical labor resources that remain available to meet future growth plans.
Please help us design such a program by responding to our "60-second" questionnaire. Your answers will better help us understand your needs.

Celebrating Chicago Beer - December Holiday Party

This year's December Holiday Meeting was one to remember! Chicago IFT hosted the first ever Chicago Beer Competition at the beautiful Brookfield Zoo on December 14th. Guests enjoyed samplings from 4 local breweries:
While the guests (judges!) sampled each beer they were able to engage with the brew masters from each brewery and discuss the nuances of each beer, the notes and the process. In addition, each brewery generously donated a branded prize to our raffle that raised over $600 for our Scholarship group! Lucky winners took home a Goose Island Turn Table, a case of Daisy Cutter, and branded bar goodies and beer from Lagunitas and Revolution.
The evening culminated with the exciting award ceremony. After votes were tallied, the winning brews were presented a crystal engraved prize. The winners for each category:
Brewer's Choice Flagship Brew Seasonal Brew
A great time was had by all, the evening was a fun way to celebrate the holiday season with our section, to socialize with colleagues, and try some great local beers.
Happy Holidays! Joy Dell'Aringa
