Suppliers' Night All Day Event Recap
| | Morning Panel Discussions, Keynote Speaker, & All Day Job FairThis year's Suppliers' Expo was a huge success with over 2,250 attendees and more than 3,600 registered. The morning seminars - NEW this year! - were well-attended, provided attendee value, and were FREE! Also new this year was the all day job fair with interviews by appointment. The exhibit hall was sold out for the fourth year in a row providing attendees with more to see than possible in the 5 1/2 hours. And a good time was had by all during the social hour that closed out the show. This great event would not be successful without the work done by our volunteers. A great big THANK YOU goes to the Suppliers' Night Committee along with support from the Employment and Program Committees. - James Anderson, Corbion - Chair

Preventive Controls Showcase - Recap
| |
The November 11th Suppliers' Night Pre-Show events were well attended and well received. Thank you to everyone that showed up early and joined us for some really great topical content.
The Preventive Controls Showcase was an insightful and interactive discussion focused on FSMA's Final Rule on Preventive Controls. The panel consisted of several well qualified experts in their given fields:
- Robert E. Brackett Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Vice President & Director of the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH)
- Dr. Purnendu Vasavada Professor Emeritus of Food Science, University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Principal of the PCV & Associates, LLC
- Janet Raddatz VP of Regulatory Quality and Food Safety, Sargento Foods Inc.
- Don Jones VP of QA, Atkins Nutritionals, Inc.
- Moderator: Tim Stubbs, CFS Vice President Product Research, Dairy Management Inc
The moderated discussion was led by Tim Stubbs with expert timing and insight. Mr. Stubbs directed the panelists to their areas of expertise as they discussed the nuances and challenges of the final rule. Each panelist offered unique insight on where companies should start - if they haven't already - and how to move forward from a baseline of a GFSI program.

CSIFT Activities Promoting Food Science & Scholarships
| |
Exciting activities are ongoing for CSIFT around scholarship and student support. A strategic analysis of CSIFT's financial information supported the Section's vote in April to expand scholarship support by $50,000 annually (from about $30,000 to $80,000). Steve Hill is leading a team of Scholarship Committee members to establish the framework for an expanded CSIFT collegiate scholarship program. This annual program will provide awards to students who either originate from the CSIFT region or attend school in the region. The specific selection criteria are currently being finalized.
To ensure we do not reinvent the wheel, a number of other IFT sections have been surveyed to understand how scholarships are awarded and to identify practices that will suit the CSIFT program.
Plans are to finalize the governance framework and selection criteria early in 2016 and open the application period by March 2016 for awards to be given for the fall 2016 school year. Read more

| Food Technologists Focus on Kombucha | |
Twenty five members of Chicago Section IFT attended an event this month that focused on kombucha. The event, held at Imbibe, educated participants on this black or green tea based beverage that is gaining popularity for its high probiotic content. This session was led by SportFuel, a boutique nutrition consulting firm that coaches professional athletes, including members of the Chicago Blackhawks and Bulls, on healthy eating. In addition to giving a tutorial on how to make your own kombucha, SportFuel staff highlighted a few products that they believe to have benefits similar to those gained by drinking kombucha. SportFuel didn't focus on any specific RTD kombucha brands, but instead promoted probiotic capsules from Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics and spores from Go MegaSpore for those who prefer their probiotics in this form. | New Professionals Update | |
The New Professionals held their November event at Revolution Brewery on the Northwest side of Chicago. We had our own private area in the Brewery Taproom to network and enjoy pizza. This was followed by a private tour of the brewery which included the history of the company, the brewing and packing process, and a beer tasting. The tour guide was happy to answer all questions from our large group of over 35 New Professionals.
The New Professionals group encourages anyone who has been in the industry 10 years or less to join in on our networking fun. Please watch the website for upcoming event dates and register for these events ahead of time at the Chicago IFT Website.
