Celebrating Chicago with The Second City
| |
The Second City. The world renowned "Harvard of Comedy" Troupe, through Second City Works, performed a wildly entertaining Improv Night at Maggiano's in Skokie .
The October 19th meeting was, one word: Fun! This month we took a non-traditional approach for the post-dinner engagement with a performance from The Second City comedy troupe. As part of the 75th Anniversary Program Theme "Celebrate Chicago!" we engaged with one of the cornerstones of Chicago culture and comedy for a wildly entertaining and creative improv show.
After sharing a delicious family-style meal at Maggiano's, the Second City players took the stage and led the audience through several games, scenes, and sketches. Audience members were encouraged to participate, shout out suggestions, and cheer along the actors. Two of our guests even got to perform a "Dr. Know-It-All" sketch on stage with the performers!
The actors were even able to incorporate some Food Science into their program. A pre-show meeting with our event sponsors: Bell Flavors & Fragrances, Dawson Sales, Merieux Nutrisciences, and EMSL Analytical generated several "industry specific" words and phrases such as: "Food Safety Modernization Act", "Standard Operating Procedure", "Natural and Artificial Flavors", and "Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points". Without the context or background of these phrases, the actors had to incorporate them at random into a scene surrounding a man and a woman in a Las Vegas Casino. Watching their take on these everyday industry phrases was hilarious and had the audience feeling like we all shared a big secret. When the actress playing a slot machine stated she "Loves doing the Food Safety Modernization Act...not the old fashioned kind of Food Safety, but the Modern Kind" - the audience lost it, and the rest of the evening followed suit. It was a fun evening, enjoyed by all, that got our right-brains working. Frank Alexander Wins 2 Tickets to a Second City Show!
