CSIFT Scholarship Initiative
Students represent the future of the food industry, yet a disturbing trend is the continued degradation of state and federal funding towards our Universities. The Chicago Section IFT currently gives $29,000 annually in different forms of scholarships and awards to students pursuing a career in the food industry. But in order to maintain the integrity of educating our future industry colleagues, more support is clearly needed.
The Chicago Section IFT has taken this to heart, where a proposal for more support is being developed that will soon be discussed and voted on at an upcoming Executive Committee Meeting. Read more>
Best regards,
John Budin

An Unprecedented Look at How Consumers Feel About Sweeteners and Why
117 members & friends and an additional 75 students enjoyed the presentation by The Sweetener360 at our March 9 meeting. If you missed it, you can download the presentation here.
Student Night was a GREAT SUCCESS - Thank You! Chicago Section IFT owes much of its success to the volunteers who support its activities. Student Night is an event that is important to students in the greater Chicagoland area as they prepare to enter the Food Science workforce.
75 students from Dominican University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Purdue University, and the University of Illinois began their day with a tour at the Silliker Plant in Crete, Illinois viewing the Food Science Center and the Routine Lab.
Joe Capp, VP of Human Resources at Silliker was available in the Career Center for questions from the students. They concluded their visit with a pizza lunch also provided by Silliker. Thank you Silliker!
After lunch they traveled to the Carlisle in Lombard for 2 hours of Speed Networking. With the assistance of 45 volunteers the students were able to get 1:2 time with our local experts. Thank you volunteers! |

Professional Development Committee News
| | Career Guidance and Continuing Education
Our next soft skill workshop is being planned for May. Following a successful creative event in December, the team is looking at several themes. Top on the list is Negotiating Skills, a topic of relevance at all levels within an organization and in our day-to-day lives. Based on feedback from our members, we are considering holding the workshop the afternoon of our Section's May Dinner Meeting. Stay tuned for details. Technical Sessions The Professional Development team is also excited to announce that our April 30, technical session event is well under way. The topic is "The Flavor of Coffee: From Bean to Cup". Imbibe has graciously offered to host the session at their new state-of-the-art beverage facility in Niles. The Imbibe team has also done a great job helping us with promotion and publicity of the event. Our speakers are Hillary Sandrock from Imbibe, Dianne Gill and Katy Metcalf from Diageo North America. Following the session, there will be tour of Imbibe's 40,000 square foot facility. Price is $15 for section members and $25 for non-members. The event will run from 730am-10am. Breakfast will be provided - courtesy of Imbibe. The session is currently sold out, but a waiting list is in place so sign up in case we have cancellations. Employment/Career Center We have a number of great positions posted on our easy to use Employment page of the website. We are also very proud that we are able to provide our members with this service. It utilizes new technology allowing companies to post open positions on the site virtually, on their own. It is free to post a job. The only requirement is that individuals who post jobs are members of the section. We are always looking for energetic and passionate individuals to join our team.
