Dear CSIFT Members & Friends,
I hope you all had a great time at the April dinner meeting. I want to thank all the committee volunteers and our business office for making the evening a very special event! The House and Program Committees continued their reputation of providing a great venue and great guest speaker for our attendees.
We had William Weissinger, Deputy District Director of the US FDA as our guest speaker. He gave a great presentation that was enjoyed by all. The topic was "Update on the Food Safety & Modernization Act". Download Presentation.
At the dinner meeting we celebrated the life of Sue Monckton (Executive Committee Member) who passed away on March 20. She spent 29 years at Kraft Food and was a devoted CSIFT member for 38 years. She served as the Chair of the Section in 2003. Her leadership and love for the Chicago Section was like no other. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten as her legacy will live on within our Section forever. Download Remembering Sue Monckton
I look forward to seeing everyone at our May 12th event at Café LaCave in Des Plaines, IL. We will have a very special guest speaker in Dr. John W. Erdman. He is a Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois. His presentation is titled "Does the Processing of Foods Impact Cancer Risk?" Register Here

Does the Processing of Foods Impact Cancer Risk?
This year's Tanner Lecture winner is John W. Erdman, Jr., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus,Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Champaign.
World-wide, cancer continues to be the primary cause of non-infectious disease mortality. It is generally assumed that environmental factors, including diet choice, account for a third or more of cancer risk. Because differential food processing operations are used to convert raw materials into final food products, one might ask whether choice of processing techniques or selection of types of processed foods increases or decreases the risk of cancer.

| Remembering Sue Monckton: 1952-2014 |
|
It is with a heavy heart that we let the IFT Chicago Section know that Sue Monckton, a devoted volunteer to the Section, passed away on Thursday afternoon.
Susan Monckton spent most of her career involving cheese research for Kraft Foods. The interest in this line of research began in her masters studies at the University of Illinois and expanded during her long research tenure at Kraft Foods. She worked in the Cheese Division as well as the Research Department that supported several categories. Now a Kraft Foods Retiree, Sue was a recognized expert in cheese and dairy technology. She was awarded 17 patents to protect the intellectual property of the research. Susan's passion for dairy research was always strong. However, we should not let it overshadow her commitment and enthusiasm for IFT. She was an active member of IFT for 38 years. Susan enjoyed serving IFT on Committees; including Tellers, Awards, 6 years as Award Jury Member, and several assignments as Host Section Activities Sub-Committee Chair at the Annual Meeting. She derived her greatest IFT joy by actively performing as a loyal member of Chicago Section of IFT (CSIFT). She served as the Chair of the Section in 2003. She also held positions as Program Chair, Past Chair, Treasurer, and member of Executive Committee for several years. Susan also served on many section committees such as Finance, Career Guidance, Newsletter, House, and Long Range Committee. In 2006 the Chicago Section IFT recognized her valuable contribution to the Section by awarding her the Ellery H. Harvey Service award for outstanding dedication to the Section. Her commitment to the Section helped keep it as one of the largest and most active sections within IFT. She will be missed! Download Memories of Sue

April Dinner Meeting Recap: Update on the Food Safety & Modernization Act
|
|
On Tuesday night of April 8 we had the opportunity to listen to William Weissinger, Deputy District Director of the US FDA speak on Updates on the Food Safety & Modernization Act.
Mr. Weissinger began with the main themes of the law, which includes: Prevention, Inspections, Compliance and Response, Import Safety and Enhanced Partnerships. Emphasis of this legislation is on prevention; while prevention is not new, Congress has given FDA explicit authority to use the tool more broadly so then to strengthen accountability for prevention. Download Presentation
Mr. Weissinger gave strong assurance that outreach and technical assistance will continue through public meetings, presentations, listening sessions, through alliances and guidance documents. Partnerships will be essential. Download Article
