Message from Chair Vijay Arora May 2013
Vijay
Chair Vijay Arora, Mondelez International

Dear CSIFT Members,

The section members have often queried about the state of our scholarship program, the number and size of awards, and the recipient organizations. It is an important topic, and I thought it would be appropriate to address it as part of the Chair's Message for this month.

Our scholarship fund is financially sound and growing. This year CSIFT will be giving out approximately $30,000 in scholarship awards and grants to the students majoring in food science, and the universities and organizations devoted to promoting and expanding food science education and related programs.

The scholarship committee under the leadership of John Budin is responsible for evaluating and screening the applications for scholarship awards and grants to ensure the eligibility and integrity of the applicants. I have listed below the CSIFT commitments for the scholarship awards for the year 2012-13:

U of I - TA Scholarship$7,000
U of I - JBT Scholarship$8,000
U of I - RAP Scholarship$8,000
Feed Tomorrow (IFT Fun Run Sponsor)$5,000
IFTSA (Midwest Regional College Bowl)$1,500
$29,500
We could not have accomplished it without your unwavering support and commitment to the CSIFT.

We will culminate the 2012-13 session of CSIFT with the hosting of The Tanner Lecture on May 13 in Northbrook Hilton. This year we have a very special guest speaker, Dr. Connie Weaver, distinguished Professor and head of the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University to talk about nutrition and dietary guidelines. Please mark your calendar and register for the meeting at your earliest convenience.

Warm regards,

Vijay

April Dinner Meeting Recap from John Chambers Chair- Elect

Discovering Hidden IP Assets: Cost-Effective Ways to Identify and Develop Untapped Intellectual Property in Your Company By George M. Carrera, Jr., Registered Patent Agent (USPTO) at Amin Talati

It was a pleasure to see everyone at the Chicago Section IFT April meeting. We had a packed house of CSIFT professionals, students and professionals from the American Association of Candy Technologists (AACT). It was an honor to have George Carrera as our guest speaker for the dinner meeting at Waterford Banquets in Elmhurst, IL.

Download George M. Carrera Jr.'s Complete Presentation

Mr. Carrera provided us a wealth of knowledge on patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and licensing that are unique to the food and candy industry. With a background in chemistry George was a perfect fit to educate our audience on cost-effective ways to identify and develop untapped intellectual property in our own companies. I know all in attendance have a better feel for IP Assets with in their fields.

George showed us what rights inventors have and the importance on documenting and being the first to file a patent. He touched on sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit. He explained their differences and what companies had patents on the products.

Updates from the University of Illinois - April 2013

It is a busy time of year at the University of Illinois. Here are just a few highlights of things happening in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition.

On March 29, the Food Science and Human Nutrition Graduate Student Association hosted their annual graduate student symposium. Students presented original research, which included topics on food chemistry, soy proteins, sugars, chocolate, nutrition fortification and biofuels.

The presentations were a good opportunity to prepare for upcoming professional meetings and were judged by external adjunct faculty members.  The Association of Food Technologists is looking forward to an upcoming lasagna dinner fundraiser to support the organization's professional development activities. They wish to thank the many companies who contributed products for this event.

University of Illinois food science students are grateful to the Chicago Section IFT and the many sponsors who made Student Night possible.  The students learned a great deal and appreciated the opportunity to engage with numerous professionals in the food science industry.

One more congratulations to the scholarship winners!

CSIFT Sponsors Teaching Assistant Scholarship!

shieldEliana Rosale is the first recipient of the CSIFT Teaching Assistantship Scholarship.

Click on the CSIFT Facebook and/or Twitter icons to view Ellana's YouTube video and learn more about this scholarship!

The Chicago Section Institute of Food Technologists (CSIFT) is positively impacting both undergraduate and graduate students by sponsoring a teaching assistant for the 2012-2013 school year

Because of continual decreases in state funding for the University of Illinois, Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) funds have been decreased for teaching assistants. CSIFT recognized  this deficit and provided a $7000 gift to support a teaching assistant for a food science course.
A graduate student will benefit from receiving
the assistantship funds, as well as the opportunity to gain teaching, supervisory, and mentoring skills. Numerous undergraduate students will be impacted more positively receiving more personal attention in the course, as well as simply being able to enroll in the course because the size of the class can be expanded when a TA is available to support the faculty member instructing the course.

Additionally, this gift will allow a faculty member to more easily balance his/her teaching, research, outreach, and advising with the assistance from a graduate student teaching assistant.

FSHN thanks the CSIFT for their new support of a graduate assistantship and continued support of undergraduate scholarships and summer out reach programs.

University of Illinois Focuses Efforts on Pilot Upgrade
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign continues its efforts to upgrade and optimize the equipment in its pilot plant.

In addition to physical upgrades to the work flow patterns inside the facility, the University hopes to upgrade much of the equipment. As part of this effort, FSHN is looking for high quality, used equipment.  Needs range from fully integrated systems to stand-alone unit operations or even support and peripheral equipment.

Gifted equipment fully qualifies as a charitable donation.  Please consider reviewing equipment inventory that you may have identified as surplus or scrap. In addition to the tax benefit, you would be helping to train the workforce of tomorrow - maybe one of your next hires!

For additional information and a copy of the needed replacement equipment list, please contact Dr. Mark Lippi at 217-300-2151, mlippi@illinois.edu.
