Message from the Chair March 2013
Vijay
Chair Vijay Arora, Mondelez International.

Dear CSIFT Members,

We had a very exciting and successful Student Night event on March 11 at Chateau del Mar in Hickory Hills.

Over 40 food science students from greater Chicago area representing U of I, IIT and Dominican College attended the event and benefited from a tour of Griffith Labs and variety of workshops organized by the Hospitality Committee under the leadership of Keith Schafer.

I have attached below a thank you note from one of the students. It's quite gratifying:

....... I just want to say thank you for the lovely CSIFT Student Night this year.  It is my second time to CSIFT Student Night and I really enjoyed it- not only the food, but also the other professionals at the Speed Networking; they have offered a lot of insights in job/ internship research. Also, the tour at Griffith Laboratory is also very good. All of the scientists at the Griffith laboratory are very happy to answer any of our questions.

Please do forward this email to other IFT board members if you have the chance; I truly appreciate the tremendous amount of effort that is put into evening.  I also want to thank the sponsors for this pleasant Chicago Section IFT student night....Sheng- Chieh Chang (Sindi), U of I (class of 2114)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Student Night committee and volunteers for a fantastic job of organizing the event, the members and corporations for sponsoring student dinners, and Griffith Labs for the facility tour.

Now I would like to share a couple of highlights from the last Executive Committee meeting:

March Meeting and Student Night Recap

  • History of Griffith Laboratories and their commitment to innovation
  • Global trends and its impact today on innovation
  • Responding to the needs of the market and their responsibilities aligned with global technical citizenship
  • By Christine Carr - VP Marketing & Global Communication
Vijay Arora, Chritine Carr,
 and John Chmabers

I was a great to see everyone at the Chicago Section IFT March meeting.

It was a packed house of over 160 industry professionals and students from the University of Illinois, Dominican University, and Illinois Institute of Technology.

It was a pleasure to have Christine Carr from Griffith Laboratories as our guest speaker for the dinner meeting held at Chateau del Mar in Hickory Hills, IL.

The day started out with the students taking a spectacular tour at Griffith Laboratories. There was an info presentation as well as an interactive session with the Griffith staff.

Then the students participated in a panel review with recruiters, and then on to a resume building session and a speed networking hour. We have received numerous positive emails from the professionals and students involved.

The students truly benefited from these activities and we look forward to continued success next year.We concluded our evening with a fantastic presentation from Christine Carr.

University of Illinois Focuses Efforts on Pilot Upgrade

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign continues its efforts to upgrade and optimize the equipment in its pilot plant.

In addition to physical upgrades to the work flow patterns inside the facility, the University hopes to upgrade much of the equipment. As part of this effort, FSHN is looking for high quality, used equipment.  Needs range from fully integrated systems to stand-alone unit operations or even support and peripheral equipment.

Gifted equipment fully qualifies as a charitable donation.  Please consider reviewing equipment inventory that you may have identified as surplus or scrap. In addition to the tax benefit, you would be helping to train the workforce of tomorrow - maybe one of your next hires!

For additional information and a copy of the needed replacement equipment list, please contact Dr. Mark Lippi at 217-300-2151, mlippi@illinois.edu.
