For the past 60 years, advances in technologies have driven innovation within the food industry.  The technologies include new ingredients, processing capabilities and a variety of packaging innovations.  These technological advances have also created change in the landscape of consumer behavior.  Ultimately, the results have reshaped how the development of new innovation must be approached and applied by companies servicing the food industry and consumers.

Griffith Laboratories serves as a good example of how a technology-driven company has re-directed its efforts to respond to changing market demands.  This transformation is based upon a change from the use of a "technology-driven" innovation process to a more "consumer-driven" innovation process. This process leverages multifunctional expertise and creates a strong project team approach. The application of this new process approach allows for more effective and efficient identification and development of successful customer solutions.  Several examples of key marketplace changes and illustrations of how Griffith's innovation process has been applied will be shared.

Message from the Chair
Vijay
Chair Vijay Arora, Mondelez International.

 Dear CSIFT Members,

The dinner meeting at the Kendal College in Chicago on Feb 11th provided a perfect ambiance for our members to mingle and network during the social hour, and then to settle down at dinner tables to enjoy the culinary specialties of Kendall chefs.

It was followed by an exciting and informative presentation on Food Safety Modernization Act by Mr. Matthew Botos, CEO, ConnectFood.

Our Section is always at the forefront that raise money to provide scholarships for food science students. I am very proud to report that the Executive Committee has unanimously approved the funding for sponsoring the following events of national prominence:

1. A $5,000 sponsorship for 2013 IFTSA/Feeding Tomorrow Fun Run & Walk  It's a major fund raising event at the annual IFT Meeting and Food Expo. Last year, the Fun Run event raised over $75,000. This year, the Fun Run will take place on July 15 in Chicago.

2. A $1,000 sponsorship for the Midwest Area College Bowl. The event is organized and hosted by the University of Illinois for the Midwest Area IFTSA. The winning team from the Midwest area will compete in the IFTSA College Bowl the Annual Meeting in Chicago this summer.

Recently our Business Office sent out an email requesting you to complete a brief survey to assist our Long Range Planning Committee in developing a strategic plan for the Section. Your prompt attention to this request is greatly appreciated.

February Dinner  Meeting Recap

Safety, Security, Sustainability, Connectivity:

Matt Botos CEO, ConnectFood

It was a pleasure to see everyone at the Chicago Section IFT February meeting. It was a packed house of over 100 people.

It was a pleasure to have Matt Botos the CEO of ConnectFood as our guest speaker for the dinner meeting held at Kendall College in Chicago, IL.

Matt educated us on the updated Food Safety Modernization Act. He pointed out that the FSMA enables FDA to better protect public health by strengthening the food safety system and how it enables FDA to focus more on preventing food safety problems rather than relying primarily on reacting to problems after they occur.

He highlighted how FSMA builds a formal system of collaboration with other government agencies, both domestic and foreign. In doing so, the statute explicitly recognizes that all food safety agencies need to work together in an integrated way to achieve our public health goals. With that said we have a long way to go in this process but we are on the right track.

Through safety, security, and sustainability as an overall concept we know how to make our food supply from farm to fork efficient and economical with a focus on the environment for the farmer, manufacturer and the consumer.

Matt also introduced us and gave background info on his company ConnectFood (www.connectfood.com) and how they can be a resource for our industry. He pointed out how ConnectFood can be The "Farm-to-Fork" knowledge exchange platform for food industry professionals to connect a vast wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the March dinner meeting which is Student Night. Be sure to come out and support the future of the CSIFT!!

Chicago Section IFT Announces Slate of Candidates for 2013 Leadership Election

Dear CSIFT Members,    shield

We are pleased to announce the upcoming 2013 CSIFT Leadership Election to be held from February 13 until March 14, 2013.

The Nominating Committee would like to present to you the slate of candidates for the positions of Chair-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer and members of the Executive Committee. All candidates have accepted their nominations and provided biographical information on their current occupation, education, current and past CSIFT/IFT activities, and purpose for running for the open positions.

Candidate for Chair-Elect Budin, Ph.D. Occupation: Corporate Director of Chemistry, Silliker

Purpose for Running: It is an honor to be nominated for the position of Chair-Elect of the Chicago Section IFT. I have been a member of IFT for 24 years when my involvement began as an undergraduate student majoring in Food Science.

My volunteer activities to IFT have been primarily through the Student Association and the Chicago Section. These volunteer experiences include many different roles which would help me to further build upon the legacy of the Chicago Section. My primary goals as Chair-Elect would be to continue build upon the strong educational opportunities provided at the Dinner meetings, continue to enhance the overall sustainability of the Section and to support the food science academic institutions within the Section.

Candidate for Secretary  Sanford Wogel, PhD, Independent Consultant at University of Chicago

Purpose for Running:

CSIFT has been the cornerstone of my career in the food industry. I want to give back to the organization and contribute to CSIFT's growth and mission in a meaningful way.

Candidate for Treasurer (appointed position)

Jamie Colby, Kraft Foods Group

Purpose for Running: I would like to increase my participation with the Chicago Section and believe I can provide strong leadership through this

role.

Candidates for Executive Committee

Glenn Bluemer, Ingredients Inc.

Purpose for Running: My purpose for running for the Executive Committee is to gain membership on this council and assist in the growth and development of the CSIFT and its members. I believe I bring a unique skill set and point of view coming from a Sales background instead of R&D or Technical and would add value to the CSIFT just as I add value to my own company. The Chicago section is the largest and most prestigious section of the IFT, and I view this as an excellent opportunity to work with one of the best and most involved organizations in the Food Industry.

Lisa Kringas, Marubeni

Purpose for Running: I was an IFT member about 20 years ago when I worked in QA at Nestlé but left to raise my family - I returned to the food industry and sold vegetable oils and preservatives to the baking industry. For the last 6 years I sold industrial chemicals, and recently returned to the food industry at Marubeni.  I want to get the most out of my membership by participating in the meetings with the top leaders in our industry. I want to work alongside other food professionals and bring education and exciting innovations to the membership. I want to align myself with this organization because I see value in the meetings and I feel I have a lot to offer to the association.

Linda Perucca, Mondelēz International

Purpose for Running: I have been a member of IFT for 24 years. After moving to the Chicago Area in 1990 I joined the Section and started becoming active on committees. Through that involvement, I have taken on a variety of roles on numerous committees. I was honored to serve as the Chair of the Section in 2002. That experience boarded my knowledge of how the section works. I believe that my experiences with both the Chicago Section and National IFT have prepared me to be a member of the Executive Committee and help elevate the Chicago Section to new levels.  Serving on the Board of Directors of IFT I can keep the section informed of activities/events. I have enjoyed my involvement in the Chicago Section IFT and would be honored to continue to serve you on the Executive Committee.

Anand Rao, PhD, Fonterra

Purpose for Running:
To actively support the Chicago Section of the IFT

- To provide input into sustained growth of the Section

Keith Schafer, Barilla

Purpose for Running: I love the IFT and want to continue to add value to the organization and its goals.

Michael Wanous, PhD, Tate & Lyle

Purpose for Running: I have benefited and enjoyed the professional and personal relationships developed during my years of affiliation with the Section. Serving on the Executive Committee will allow me to professionally and personally contribute back to its continuing excellence.

The ballot goes out weekly via email on Wednesdays through March 14.  If you have not received your ballot contact the Business Office immediately!  630.916.4960 or BusinessOffice@ChicagoIFT.org.

Volunteers & Sponsors Needed for Student Night

Student Night March 11, 2013shield

We are now planning our activities for an even better Student Night. March 11th will be here before you know it!

The Hospitality Committee of CSIFT is responsible for the success of its annual Student Night event. In order to make it successful we need your help! Contact Keith Shafer to volunteer (keithmmman1@hotmail.com).

Volunteers are needed for the following activities:

1. Resume building (3-4 PM). You get to meet one on one with students(maybe more than one at a time) and review their resumes and give them help based on what your experiences are. We do have have recruiters
involved, but we also need some lay people to help.

2. Speed networking (4-5 PM). You work firsthand with students to answer questions they may have about industry, moving into industry, the first job, etc.

3. Goodie bags. We like to give the students something from the night's activities. Company give-aways or related materials would be great. These items can either be brought early on the evening of the event or sent to
Keith Shafer (keithmmman1@hotmail.com) prior to March 11. We expect to have 60 students.

4. Sponsor a Student Dinner (or two or three!): Student meals are free to the attending students and the cost to feed 60 students is approximately $2,400.00 so your support is needed! All student dinner sponsors will be recognized at the dinner. Student Dinner Sponsorship
