Message from the Chair February  2013

Vijay Dear CSIFT Members,

Happy New Year!

We kicked-off the new year with a packed house of over 165 members at the dinner meeting held in Rosewood Restaurant & Banquets on January 14th. Dr. Mark Whitacre, the whistleblower in the ADM price fixing case in mid-1990s, was our very special guest and keynote speaker. The first part of Dr. Whitacre's talk on "Challenges of Business & Ethics in both the National and International Arena" was quite riveting and enlightening.

The dinner meeting provided a remarkable opportunity for our members to meet Mark (aka, The Informant) in person, and to watch him talk candidly about his role in the ADM price fixing case, and his incredible ordeal with FBI agents as an informant in exposing the scandal. The second part of Dr. Whitacre's presentation on the role of selenium in enhancing immune activities was equally exciting and enticing. It was a great evening!

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the programming committee members for an outstanding job in ensuring the quality and diversity of topics and speakers for our dinner meetings. If you have a special topic or speaker in mind for the dinner meeting, please feel free to contact John Chambers, Chair, Program Committee. We truly value your comments and feedback.

January Dinner  Meeting Recap

Vijay Auroa,
Mark Whitacre, John Chambers

It was a pleasure to see everyone at the Chicago Section IFT January meeting. It was a packed house of over 165 people.

It was truly an honor to have Mark Whitacre, Ph.D. COO and President of Cypress Systems as our guest speaker for the dinner meeting held at Rosewood Restaurant in Rosemont, IL.

We have received dozens of positive responses to his speech on how he captivated our audience as they were on the edge of their seat waiting for the next detail.

He mesmerized the crowd with his life story and details on the ADM price fixing scandal from the early 1990's. He painted a vibrant picture of his life as an FBI informant and the challenges that go along with it. While being a leader of a fortune 500 company as well as father and husband.

Download Presentation "When Good Leaders Lose Their Way" Here"

He showed how he got so caught up in greed and how that same greed was his biggest downfall. It is truly remarkable to see how Mark has transformed his life since those years at ADM. And it was a big reminder to us how easy it is to lose our way in the business world.

Mark also introduced us to his current involvement with Cypress Systems and Selenium. Through Cypress Systems he now is able to get a second chance to make a positive impact in the food industry. He educated the audience on cancer preventative measures we can take with healthy lifestyles and Selenium. And showed how Selenium plays an important role in our bodies' natural defense against free radicals. His info was backed by clinical trials by the National Cancer Institute

Chicago Section IFT Announces Slate of Candidates for 2013 Leadership Election

Dear CSIFT Members,    shield

We are pleased to announce the upcoming 2013 CSIFT Leadership Election to be held from February 13 until March 14, 2013.

The Nominating Committee would like to present to you the slate of candidates for the positions of Chair-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer and members of the Executive Committee. All candidates have accepted their nominations and provided biographical information on their current occupation, education, current and past CSIFT/IFT activities, and purpose for running for the open positions.

Candidate for Chair-Elect Budin, Ph.D. Occupation: Corporate Director of Chemistry, Silliker

Purpose for Running: It is an honor to be nominated for the position of Chair-Elect of the Chicago Section IFT. I have been a member of IFT for 24 years when my involvement began as an undergraduate student majoring in Food Science.

My volunteer activities to IFT have been primarily through the Student Association and the Chicago Section. These volunteer experiences include many different roles which would help me to further build upon the legacy of the Chicago Section. My primary goals as Chair-Elect would be to continue build upon the strong educational opportunities provided at the Dinner meetings, continue to enhance the overall sustainability of the Section and to support the food science academic institutions within the Section.

Candidate for Secretary  Sanford Wogel, PhD, Independent Consultant at University of Chicago

Purpose for Running:

CSIFT has been the cornerstone of my career in the food industry. I want to give back to the organization and contribute to CSIFT's growth and mission in a meaningful way.

Candidate for Treasurer (appointed position)

Jamie Colby, Kraft Foods Group

Purpose for Running: I would like to increase my participation with the Chicago Section and believe I can provide strong leadership through this

role.

Candidates for Executive Committee

Glenn Bluemer, Ingredients Inc.

Purpose for Running: My purpose for running for the Executive Committee is to gain membership on this council and assist in the growth and development of the CSIFT and its members. I believe I bring a unique skill set and point of view coming from a Sales background instead of R&D or Technical and would add value to the CSIFT just as I add value to my own company. The Chicago section is the largest and most prestigious section of the IFT, and I view this as an excellent opportunity to work with one of the best and most involved organizations in the Food Industry.

Lisa Kringas, Marubeni

Purpose for Running: I was an IFT member about 20 years ago when I worked in QA at Nestlé but left to raise my family - I returned to the food industry and sold vegetable oils and preservatives to the baking industry. For the last 6 years I sold industrial chemicals, and recently returned to the food industry at Marubeni.  I want to get the most out of my membership by participating in the meetings with the top leaders in our industry. I want to work alongside other food professionals and bring education and exciting innovations to the membership. I want to align myself with this organization because I see value in the meetings and I feel I have a lot to offer to the association.

Linda Perucca, Mondelēz International

Purpose for Running: I have been a member of IFT for 24 years. After moving to the Chicago Area in 1990 I joined the Section and started becoming active on committees. Through that involvement, I have taken on a variety of roles on numerous committees. I was honored to serve as the Chair of the Section in 2002. That experience boarded my knowledge of how the section works. I believe that my experiences with both the Chicago Section and National IFT have prepared me to be a member of the Executive Committee and help elevate the Chicago Section to new levels.  Serving on the Board of Directors of IFT I can keep the section informed of activities/events. I have enjoyed my involvement in the Chicago Section IFT and would be honored to continue to serve you on the Executive Committee.

Anand Rao, PhD, Fonterra

Purpose for Running:
To actively support the Chicago Section of the IFT

- To provide input into sustained growth of the Sectio

Keith Schafer, Barilla

Purpose for Running: I love the IFT and want to continue to add value to the organization and its goals.

Michael Wanous, PhD, Tate & Lyle

Purpose for Running: I have benefited and enjoyed the professional and personal relationships developed during my years of affiliation with the Section. Serving on the Executive Committee will allow me to professionally and personally contribute back to its continuing excellence.

Voting will be done electronically and administered by our business office. You will receive an email with further instructions when the voting period starts. We encourage you to participate and cast your vote. For any questions please contact me at uwe.nienaber@kraftfoods.com.

Sincerely,

Uwe Nienaber

The Host Section Activities Committee will be chaired by Pat Sullivan and Linda Perucca, but we don't do it alone. There are several sub-committees involved as well. Many of the positions are filled, but we are still looking for a Co-Chair for "Family Activities." We are also seeking volunteers to staff all the sub-committee. If you are interested please contact the Co-Chairs of the committee. Volunteers receive (1) complimentary registration to IFT based on a contribution of at least (6) hours of assigned volunteer duties.

Hospitality - Brigid Heath at brigid.heath@yahoo.com or Carol Bender at cbender@lifewise1.com.  The primary responsibility of the Hospitality volunteers is to provide information and assistance to meeting attendees. Volunteers should be prepared to answer questions relating to area attractions, restaurants, cab fares, shuttle bus routes, directions to city activities, maps, sights, costs, certified and state approved baby sitters service, location of meeting rooms, etc.   It is suggested the volunteers know the location of all functions and attend the AMFE Host Section tour of the Convention Center which will be scheduled prior to the meeting.
