Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

While it is not yet Thanksgiving, you certainly can't tell with the excitement and buzz on campus. This evening the Cadets, faculty and staff enjoyed Hargrave's traditional pre-Break Thanksgiving meal together. Miss Kerry provided traditional turkey, herb stuffing and gravy. Honey baked ham was available as well as macaroni and cheese. Green beans and onions made an appearance with Southern Style mustard greens. There were rolls, pumpkin pies and hot fudge pies. Finally, everyone enjoyed the mashed potato bar. It was a great spread.

Beta Club
The Hargrave Beta Club
Giving also entered the hearts of our Beta Club this week. Our Beta Cadets financially supported and led a food packing drive on Saturday. They invited and successfully received support from Chatham Hall students, a all-girl boarding school located in Chatham. Together they had over 60 participants who packed over 10,000 meals in two hours. The Cadets enjoyed themselves and made a positive contribution to our community.

Hargrave completed its Four Pillars video series recently. There are a lot of comments from Cadets, faculty and staff. Someone you know is probably presented in this set of videos. The series individually highlights each of Hargrave's Four Pillars: which are academics, character development, athletics/fitness and spiritual growth. They capture the essence of Hargrave's mission, to develop Cadets who are men of character and contributing citizens within their communities. Thank you to everyone who participated. It is a great effort. Please share these videos with family, friends and any potential families who might be interested in Hargrave!

As we get ready to close up for the Thanksgiving Break, there is one bit of news. After five years of teaching English at Hargrave, Ms. Pam Morrow will be departing at the mid-year break (following New Year's). She will be returning to Richmond, Virginia, to focus on family. An active search is underway for a replacement for Ms. Morrow in the English Department.

Finally, The Cadets are looking forward spending time at home. Please travel safely, and enjoy the holiday with your families.

Best Regards,

Happy Thanksgiving from Parent Council
Hargrave Parent Council

The Parent Council would like to wish our Hargrave Family a very Happy Thanksgiving. As I look at the difficulties so many people face as a result of recent events, I am reminded of the fragile world in which we live. To see people giving their time and resources to help others in need is indeed a blessing and something to be thankful for. In that spirit, I am also thankful for the opportunity that Hargrave provides to our sons, giving them the foundation to prepare for their life journey ahead.

Please be safe as you gather with your family and loved ones with the holiday season upon us. I know the boys are ready for this break. Encourage them to stay focused during those few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It will make such a difference as they prepare for semester exams. Enjoy your time together and have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Hancock, DPT

Stop Hunger Now! Food Packing Event
Hargrave Beta Club

Hargrave Military Academy's National Beta Club and Stop Hunger Now! joined forces in the global fight against hunger.

Around the world, nearly 795 million people lack adequate food. Stop Hunger Now! is a relief organization providing food to the most disadvantaged and operates meal packaging locations in 19 cities throughout the U.S. and five international locations. Through the efforts of the Hargrave Beta Club, a meal packing event was held in Chatham on Saturday, November 14, 2015.

"We were thrilled with the turnout and support for our Hargrave Cadets and Chatham Hall students," said Trish Martin, Hargrave's Mathematics Department Chair and Beta Club co-sponsor. "Everyone had a fantastic time. They bagged over 10,000 meals in under two hours, a wonderful team effort."

66 volunteers worked the packing tables for the effort. 40 Hargrave Cadet volunteers were joined by 16 Chatham Hall student volunteers to pack 10,152 meals, a full shipping pallet. The combined group accomplished their goal with 15 minutes to spare of a two hour time limit. Additionally, ten adult leaders from both schools assisted the combined student group. Wendy Bradley and Lys (Liting) Lin supported the Chatham Hall students. Hargrave faculty and staff members CPT Carlos Alvelo, Trish Baker, Donna Cooper (Hargrave Beta Club co-sponsor), William Eberly, Mingyue Jiang, Martin, Darlene Paton and CPT Michael Woods pitched in to assist the Cadets.

On Saturday, November 14, 2015, MAJ Scott Roach and MCPO Robert Wickboldt took the Cadets to see the University of North Carolina (UNC) take on the University of Miami in a college football game. UNC has been on a roll this year with only one loss on the season. Saturday was no different as UNC crushed Miami 59-21 and improve to 9-1 season record. Additionally, UNC moved to number 12 in the national rankings. Most Cadets cheered for the UNC victory.

Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Trish Martin, Mrs. Donna Cooper and Coach William Eberly worked with the Hargrave Beta Club to bring a Stop Hunger Now! service project to campus. The effort included all Beta Club members and a large number of Cadet volunteers. 16 Chatham Hall students and 10 adult volunteers from both schools helped. These volunteers managed to pack over 10,000 meals in two hours. (Read more about this service effort in the preceding article.)

"It was wonderful to watch the Cadets working hard, and having fun serving. It was a blessed day and it really gave the guys the service bug. Some are asking what will 'our' next service project will be because they want to join-in."

Saturday evening, the Cadets were treated to pizza and a movie. "Fast and Furious 7" played on Grant Gym's huge 20 foot wall screen. All proceeds from the pizza sale went to the Stop Hunger Now! service project hosted earlier that day. (We pre-sold 125 pizzas which really helped towards paying for the 10,000 meals.) It was a great action movie for a pizza dinner. The explosions and action was non-stop. A special 'Thank You' goes out to Cadets Rafizadeh and Kiesnowski who stayed after to help clean up.

astronomy
Science astronomy trip.
Saturday evening, Dr. Steve Griffin took the Hargrave Science Club to the Peaks of Otter for a hands-on astronomy session. The speaker was Greg Redfern, an adjunct professor/instructor of astronomy since 1984 and a NASA JPL Solar System Ambassador since 2003.

The topic of the night was "The Lives of the Stars." The night answered the questions, 'How do the stars, including our Sun, shine? How are they born, how do they live, and - ultimately - die?' The Cadets loved going on the fun yet educational trip learning from a man with such an incredible background. After the presentation the Cadets were able to move outside to the lawn area by the edge of the lake to see the night sky in all its glory while listening to sky lore and fascinating space facts.

This trip goes hand in hand with the Science Department's push to see the Cadets having fun exploring science. The Science Club is using the Academy greenhouse, the telescopes on the astronomy deck, the pond and much more in exploring the science of things around them.

On Sunday, November 15, 2015, CPT Carlos Alvelo opened the Hargrave paintball field to the Cadets. The paintballs, which fly around 100 mph, blasted trees, forts, bunkers and fellow Cadets in a great day of fun. While safety is key in fun paintball, the Cadets enjoy comparing the 'war wounds' of paintball welts after each scenario. Scenarios often include Capture the Hill, Zombie Attack and Defend the Fort.

Player of the Week Soccer
l-r: Cadet Chris Czarnecki, Coach Jeremy Eubank, Cadet Raines Wall and Cadet Nick Marsoobian celebrate Player of the Week status.
Hargrave Military Academy's varsity soccer team set a new program milestone after three team members were named Virginia Player of the Week. Each Cadet represented Virginia in a national listing of Cadets of the Week on MaxPreps, a popular online high school sport website.

MaxPreps working with the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) named Hargrave Cadets Chris Czarnecki (Week of September 7, 2015), Raines Wall (Week of September 21, 2015) and Nick Marsoobian (Week of October 5, 2015) as Boy's Players of the Week during the competitive 2015 Fall season.

"To have three players selected over the course of a season is a testament to the hard work and effort that these three young men have put in during the season," said Coach Jeremy Eubank, Hargrave's head soccer coach. "This is a very big moment for our soccer program, having three players selected in a season is unheard of. This is an exceptional honor and as this ranges from all of the schools in Virginia that play soccer in the fall!"
