"A capacity, and taste, for reading, gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others. It is the key, or one of the keys, to the already solved problems. And not only so. It gives a relish, and facility, for successfully pursuing the [yet] unsolved ones."
-- Abraham Lincoln, Address before the
Wisconsin State Agricultural Society, 1859

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

After a very dry July and August, Hargrave is currently getting caught up on its annual rainfall totals. The rain began for us last Friday and it has continued to rain every day. While the rain is certainly welcomed, it has complicated our Fall sports schedules and outdoor student activities events.

One event impacted by the weather is the varsity football game versus Massanutten. Both teams moved the game to Thursday, October 1 from Friday, October 2. The new start time is 4:30 p.m. I realize it is a sudden change, and I hope some parents can still enjoy the game.

Filling Hargrave's pool.
Filling the pool.
The rain also provided Hargrave an unexpected bonanza. The Town of Chatham is now releasing enough water for the Academy to refill the swimming pool. The pool suffered a pipe break, which has been fixed. The pool requires 1.2 million gallons of water to fill! The town had a reason to be concerned. Fortunately, our swimmers will be in the water soon with Coach Manley.

The Hargrave Parent Council does a great job supporting our Cadets and Academy. During Parent's Weekend, they sponsor an annual silent auction to raise funding for their campus projects and events. They are in need of items to auction. Items can include trips to gift baskets to sports memorabilia. Every year it is different.

If you have an item that you can contribute to the event, please notify Hargrave Parent Council president Dr. Cheryl Hancock. Items can be delivered to the Academy. MAJ Tim Oditt, our Chief of Staff, is the liaison between the Academy and the Council. He collects items for delivery to the Council. Please contact either one for your donation. Every year it is fun; when you attend the Parent's Weekend events I highly encourage you to attend the auction.

Hargrave's Corps of Cadets has begun parade practice for the October 17th event. Hargrave's Cadet leadership is looking forward to putting on a great parade. The Cadets are already looking good, so I expect a great Parent's Weekend.

The 2015 Parent's Weekend schedule has been released. There is a lot of activity on campus during the weekend. The schedule is a great way to know what is going on when it is going on. The complete schedule follows later in the eNewsletter. I certainly hope to meet you again during the weekend.

Responsibility poster
Responsibility character theme.
The character theme for the month of October is Responsibility. Many of our Cadets want to attend Officer/NCO Candidate School with a goal of becoming leaders so they earn authority. One of the first lessons of leadership is: "Responsibility exists in equal measure with authority." This is a lifelong lesson that is important no matter what pathway a young man pursues. Authority and responsibility (and understanding the relationship) are vital in the business world as well as government and the military. We want our Cadets to understand that if you are given a task to accomplish--then you have authority get it done AND the responsibility to ensure it's done to standard.

Best Regards,

Don Broome

October is for Parent's Weekend
Hargrave Parent Council

Now that the schedule is available for Parents Weekend, there are some special activities you won't want to miss. If you arrive Friday, later that evening, our varsity football team would love to have some Tiger Spirit and cheers as they face Grace Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on our home field. And, don't forget the meet and greet with TAC Officers from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Of course, the Parent Council Silent Auction will be underway during most of the weekend, so don't miss an opportunity to stop by and bid on some great items. We are getting items in from multiple College game tickets covering various sporting events, Hargrave apparel and accessories to show school spirit, gift certificates to area restaurants and don't forget about our over 21 table. Stay tuned for more items in next week's newsletter and last minute ideas for those of you who might want to bring an item to place in the auction when you register on Friday.

Watch for your online raffle tickets to come in an email so you can get your chance to win a Yeti Cooler with lock and cup ($450 value). Tickets will be available for purchase at the auction.

For our families that haven't had experienced the Fall Dress Parade, you are in for a treat. The boys are working very hard in parade practice and to see them in their full military dress uniform will leave quite an impression. I can't guarantee you won't have a tear when you see your son and don't forget to bring your camera!

Sincerely,

Cheryl Hancock, DPT

National Youth Leadership Forum
Massina, Vogg

vogg, massina
l-r: Vogg, Massina
Hargrave Cadets Charles Massina and Jesse Vogg participated with the National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security - Diplomacy, Intelligence & Defense (NYLF) from September 22-27, 2015. Both Cadets joined a select group of students who are interested in the many disciplines that help keep the country, and its citizens, safe.

Both Cadets received an up-close look at the national security infrastructure of the United States through site experiences, a career fair, a real-world crisis simulation and interactions with nationally recognized speakers.

"The main idea I took away from the conference was a new understanding of what the Secretary of Defense has to go through on a everyday basis, and what it takes to run the armed forces," Vogg said.

The NYLF is a six-day program that prepares high school students for careers in defense, intelligence and the diplomatic corps. Participants have the opportunity to get an in-depth look at how the United States plans for peace and prepares for crisis.

Environmental Science sees Real World Applications

CPT Ott's 5th Block Environmental Science
explores raw water processing.

CPT Ed Ott took his fifth block Environmental Science Class to the Town of Chatham's Department of Water Works on Wednesday, September 30, 2015. Superintendent Rodney Bryant showed the Cadets how raw water is processed into potable water for use throughout the Town.

A tour was provided of Chatham's water plant. A discussion included the elimination of organic contaminants and the use of chemicals to control the results needed for good, finished water. Both physical and chemical processes are used during processing. Good management and ongoing testing provide stability to the ongoing effort.

CPT Ott was following up on an inquiry the Cadets made about water processing in class, and took the opportunity to explore a subject the Cadets were Cadets showed significant interest.
Order of The Sabre
Sabre Banquet Saturday, October 10, 2015

Sabre Club
Hargrave Military Academy's growth and success over the past 27 years could not have been possible without the school's generous alumni, parents and friends whose sustains Hargrave as America's premier military boarding school. During the 1987-1988 school year, the Academy chose to honor those donors with exceptional lifetime giving, those with annual giving at or above the $1,000 level and those who have made planned gifts to the school with induction into appropriate levels of the Order of the Sabre.

We are proud to continue this tradition just as we are proud of the many who continue the tradition of providing the very best for the Cadets.

We would love to have you join and be recognized at the 27th Annual Order of the Sabre Banquet on Saturday, October 10, 2015.

To learn more about this event and how your giving can benefit Hargrave's Cadets, please contact Mrs. Pat Keatts at [email protected] or call 434-432-2688.

Student Activities

On Saturday, September 26, 2015, the Hargrave Cadets did their best to fight the rainy day outside with an NBA 2K16 video game tournament. The newly release game provided some great heated game play all day long.

The winners were as follows: Cadet Bennett, 1st Place; Cadet Burnette, 3rd Place; and Cadet Powers, 3rd Place.

On Sunday, September 27, 2015, it was still raining. Coach William Eberly and Ms. Jiang took the Cadets to McDonald's, Food Lion and the Dollar Store. The stops provided a simple, stress free off-campus time. "The Cadets really loved getting off campus and hanging out with friends," Eberly said.
