Hargrave Summer School and Camp Newsletter

Completing the Third Week

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

Last weekend marked the midway point in Hargrave's 2015 Summer School and Camp. It has been a very productive summer so far, and I've been happy with our student's performance. While four weeks is not a lot of time to work with a young man, I hope you're seeing some positive changes in how he approaches academic work and engages peers.

Campers are having a great summer... learning new things!
Our regular school affords our young men more time and opportunities to advance themselves. If you're seeing positive change, it is not unexpected. Consider a regular year at Hargrave.

Midterm grades were provided this week. Grades are found on in the Academy's myBackpack grade portal. If you're not able to access this portal, please contact Mrs. Kim Haymes Fowlkes, Hargrave's Registrar at 434-432-2574.

Dialogue with our parents is incredibly important. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Jim Tung, Hargrave's Summer School and Camp Coordinator, at 434-441-6719. Dr. Tung can also be reached at [email protected]. He is the best person to discuss your son's total summer performance both in and out of the classroom. He can knock down barriers, open up discussions and develop strategies.

After exams last Saturday, the students were able to participate at an indoor rock climbing gym in Raleigh. On Sunday, they took to the field and wood course for paintball for another large game of paintball. This coming weekend highlights a new movie, a big Wet'n Wild trip and the last paintball game. I've been informed this last paintball game will feature some nice prizes.

Have a great week!

Best Regards,

During Summer School and Camp, Hargrave recognizes students who stand out from their peers. Students are nominated by faculty and staff for exemplifying good community building and citizenship skills. This  includes helpfulness, the willingness to reach out and embracing diversity. Hargrave Military Academy President Don Broome (BG USA, Ret.) presented the awards in a group summer camp presentation.

This week students were selected based on the character theme of perseverance. Perseverance is the ability and drive to start and continue steadfastly on the path towards a set goal. As a personal value, it gives shape and strengthens one's character to keep focused on a goal. It is triggered by the realization that most fundamentally good things come with hard work and determination.

Students were nominated by the Faculty and Staff for exemplifying the trait of Perseverance, particularly in light of improvement (academic, athletic, social) for Week 2, ending with Midterm exams

The following students were named:

Carter B. Gustine
Kaden J. Hitchcock
James S. Kostelni

Great job!

Student Activities

On Saturday afternoon, July 10, 2015, Coach Jeremy Eubank and Mrs. Dena Olsen took the campers out for an All-You-Can-Eat Hibachi grill buffet before the evening's big bowling showdown. The camper had fun being  competitive and staying out of the gutter.

Saturday also featured Coach Bill Eberly and Coach Aaron Marshall's trip to the Triangle Indoor Rock Club, a rock climbing gym, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The club is owned by Hargrave alumni Andrew Kratz. "Our Adventure guys worked very hard all week to be ready for this trip," Eberly said. "They learned to tie their knots, belay, rappel and climb on our 35 ft Rock Climbing tower here on campus.  They had to go through a pass fail belay test at the gym with no help, proving they were competent in all areas of climbing safety. Everyone PASSED and away they went climbing the day away."

Each camper received their own pizza and a good workout. They climbed all night, for five hours, and had to be dragged out the door at closing. On the ride back, a debate ensued. Was the kayak trip better than the rock climbing trip? The grand finale is next weekend, when Adventure Camp goes on an overnight white water rafting trip on the Lower New River in Minden, West Virginia.

On Sunday, July 11, 2015, Mrs. Trish Martin and 45+ Cadets slung paint balls at each other on Hargrave's paintball course. They played numerous games, including Fortress attack, Zombie and King of the Hill. Welts were earned. Smiles were big. Next weekend features a raffle give away that the young men do not want to miss.
