"Towering genius disdains a beaten path. It seeks regions hitherto unexplored."

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,During Homecoming 2015 the Class of 2015 presented their senior class gift to Hargrave. They set themselves apart from previous graduating classes with a donation of a Harpers Ferry Model 1855 percussion-based rifle-musket. It is a weapon with a very rich historical value, and the example they provided the Academy is exceptional. Being exceptional is the hallmark of their class. While it was read during Homecoming 2015, here is the statement the Class of 2015 provided with their gift: Class Gift 2015
| Presentation of the Harpers Ferry Model 1855 percussion-based rifle-musket. |
The Harpers Ferry Armory was the second Federal Armory commissioned by the United States government. A 125 acre parcel of land chosen by George Washington was purchased by the United States government in 1796 from the heirs of Robert Harper and construction subsequently began on the national armory in 1799. Mass production of military arms commenced three years later. The armory is most known for the 1859 raid in which abolitionist John Brown failed in inciting a slave revolt as a result of this seizure. During the Civil War, the armory changed hands between the Union and Confederates a total of seven times. The U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1855 percussion-based rifle-musket saw considerable use during the American Civil War and is iconic for its service on all sides of the battlefield. A rifle such as this one is extremely rare; the armory was burned twice during the Civil War, once by Confederates and once by the Union. In 1861, when the Armory was burned by the Confederates, many of the scarce iron-mounted 1855 Rifles were destroyed. Nearly all of the surviving rifles saw hard use with the Federal and Confederate armies during the Civil War and, as a result, many surviving examples of the Model 1855 Rifle are scarce and show the effects of extensive battlefield service.
The Senior Class of 2015 has purchased a U.S. Model 1855 Rifle and is donating it to Hargrave Military Academy. This particular rifle was manufactured by the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia in 1859 and is considered to be in excellent condition with all of its original parts and to be nearly perfect in every respect. Very few Model 1855s exist in this outstanding condition. It is a storied weapon to have fought for both side of the grand and bloody American conflict and it now exists as a proud and historical supplement to the Hargrave campus.
Mother's Day is just a few short days away. Hargrave's Corps of Cadets has been drilling daily and I feel sure they will provide a great performance for parents and families. The Mother's Day Schedule is online and follows later in this Parent eNewsletter.

Racing, the Avengers and a Picnic
| | Student Activities
On Saturday, May 2, 2015 CPT Ed Ott and his wife treated the Cadets to another trip to Camp Motorsport. "After our safety brief, one of the owners offered a compliment stating that our Cadets 'really know how to follow directions,'" Ott said. "No one could contain their excitement as they prepared to compete on a friendly basis. Once it was discovered that some Karts were better than others some squabbling arose, but a system of drawing numbers soon squashed it. The coveted #61 kart was able to, with skillful driving, lap the other drivers at least once and some less experienced drivers twice." On Sunday, May 3, 2014 LTC Mike Broomell and CPT Carlos Alvelo took a large group of Cadet to see the new "Avengers" movie. Everyone raved about a great "awesome and action packed the movie."
| Serving the extra large burgers! |
Sunday also featured the 2015 Senior Picnic. Coach Bill Eberly, Mrs. Dena Olsen and her husband, Coach Ben Paris, Commandant Mike Payne, CPT Eric Samuels and MAJ William Wiebking gave the seniors a fun afternoon together off campus. The event was held at Camp Pitt, a religious recreation area featuring a large number of activities. Activities included volleyball, basketball, soccer, archery, football, corn hole, pond swimming, canoeing and fishing. Cadet Greenwood won the $25 prize for the largest fish. Coach Paris showcased his awesome grilling skills on giant burgers provided by Mrs. Kerry Watts. Food portions made a big impression. The picnic was a great success, and gave the Class of 2015 one last time together as a group in a relaxed setting.

Brunetti sets three new Academy records
| | Varsity Lacrosse
On May 2, 2015 in a makeup game with Benedictine Military School, Cadet Christopher Brunetti, a senior, set three new Hargrave Varsity Lacrosse records. Brunetti, an attackman, broke Hargrave Varsity Lacrosse's Single Season Scoring Record with 61 points. The top record was previously held by Zach Lepchitz '02, who had 52 single season points. Brunetti also claimed two other records from Lepchitz. Brunetti is now first in career points at 131 to Lepchitz's 127. In career goals, Brunetti is 109 goals to Lepchitz's 92 goals. Both players were tremendous assets to the Hargrave Lacrosse program and their records are currently maintained at the Hargrave Lacrosse Team Overview page. Coach Matt Brawn will try to expand this information into a top ten list over the summer.
