"Your soul is all that you possess. Take it in hand
and make something of it!
"
-- Martin H. Fischer

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

In a day, your son will be home for Spring Break! I know everyone of our Cadets are looking for some time off, and Hargrave's 2015 Spring Break will certainly be a well deserved break for them.

In the classrooms, sport fields and in general activity, your sons have been very busy accomplishing goals and completing tasks. The time between Semester Break until now has been extremely productive. I've been pleased with the overall performance of the Corps of Cadets as scholars, athletes and leaders.

Cadet on Climbing Tower
Coach Eberly watches Cadet Flender rappel the climbing tower during the 2015 EoT.
Hargrave hosted the 2015 Eye of the Tiger (EoT) competition this past weekend. This is a big challenge for many of our young men who volunteered to participate in EoT. The competition began after class on Saturday and concluded with the Warrior Breakfast (lots of steak and eggs!) on Sunday morning. We started with 56 Cadets and 33 Cadets completed the competition! All of our young men were tired and had sore muscles--but, they had learned something about themselves and learned they could overcome challenges they never knew possible. I'm proud of all the Cadets that pursued the 2015 EoT. I'm especially proud that we had four Cadets who didn't meet the standard in last year's EoT and wanted to challenge themselves again this year. All four succeeded this year!

Cadet Williams confirms
his faith.
I also witnessed four Cadets accept to accept Christ into their lives this weekend through a personal profession of faith. Chaplain Joe Moran held a Baptismal service for Cadets Garrett Fox, Nathan O'Dell, Ralph Reynolds and Daeon Williams. It was a great moment to share with these young men. God indeed has a plan for them. I look forward to their continued spiritual growth.

This Friday also marks the end of the 5th Six Weeks interim. The interim is the halfway point for the grading period. Academic designations earned during the 5th Six Week period determines who joins other Cadets on the parade field for President's List, Dean's List or President's Commendation List recognition during the Mother's Day Parade. It doesn't hurt to express your expectations to your son. We are constantly telling every Cadet, "Stay focused."

The Academic Department has sent out Academic Planning Forms for the 2015-2016 Academic Year to all current Cadet parents. If you have questions or would like to schedule a visit to discuss next year's courses, please contact Dean Walter Sullivan, Dr. Jim Tung or Mrs. Dena Olsen.  It's never too early to begin the re-enrollment process.

Tuesday following Chapel Service, we recognized Ms. Trish Martin as our Team Member of the Month for February 2015.  Ms. Martin, our Math Department Chair, goes above and beyond to support our Cadets and exemplifies the Hargrave Spirit. When you see her on Friday, please congratulate her!

As busy as February and March 2015 were for the Cadets, the end of the school year is quickly approaching. After Spring Break, this is especially true. The Corps of Cadets will be back at their academics, sports games and activities. Junior and sophomore Retreats, Homecoming Weekend/Parade, Mother's Day Parade and the senior's ongoing preparation for graduation will leave many of us, including Cadets, faculty and staff, feeling like the days are rushing by all too quickly.

Have a great Spring Break. Enjoy the time with your sons. Be safe, and we'll see everyone in April for a great finish to the 2014-2015 Academic year!

Best Regards,

Don Broome

Spring Break!
Hargrave Parent Council

I am sure everyone is eagerly anticipating Spring Break, especially the boys! It seems like the time between Spring Break and the end of school passes in a "blink of an eye." Please encourage your sons to hang in there and give the rest of the school year their best in everything they do. The finish line is so close and it matters! On behalf of Parent Council, safe travels and have a blessed Easter holiday.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Hancock, DPT

Cadet Baptists
(l-r) Hargrave Chaplain Joe Moran; Cadet Ralph Reynolds; Cadet Garrett Fox; Cadet Daeon Williams; and Cadet Nathan O'Dell.

Hargrave Military Academy witnessed a multiple baptism on Sunday afternoon, March 22, 2015. Hargrave Chaplain Joe Moran officiated the baptism of four Cadets willing to let Christ into their lives. Baptism is a significant step for anyone progressing in the Christian faith, and these four Cadets chose a path forward with Christ.

"I have some good news that I want to share. I have had four Cadets come to me and ask if they could be baptized in the pool. I have put them off for about a month to see just how serious they were and each of them has not let it go. They understand what baptism represents," Chaplain Moran said. "Keep in mind, these young men are by no means perfect in their faith, but I believe they have a genuine desire to be and this is a good step for them to take."

The Cadets include: Cadet Garrett Fox, parent Alex and Leslie Fox of Ashburn, Virginia; Cadet Nathan O'Dell, parent Michael and Loraine O'Dell of Las Vegas, Nevada; Cadet Ralph Reynolds, parent Ralph and Sharon Reynolds of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Cadet Daeon Williams, parent Vintinia Harris of Pasadena, Maryland.

"(This is) definitely the highlight of my two years here as Chaplain. Four great young men that God will use to do great things in the future."

EoT, Harlem Globetrotters and Scuba
Student Activities

On Saturday, March 21, 2015, Hargrave Cadets participating in the Eye of the Tiger (EoT) Challenge began their trials immediately following morning class. With a short stop for dinner, the trials continued until midnight.

On Sunday, March 22, 2015, Hargrave Cadets participating in the Eye of the Tiger (EoT) Challenge completed their last challenge in the pool and enjoyed a steak breakfast, which is typically the most amazing breakfast of the year. An awards presentation followed.

Coach Thomas Messinger and Ms. Kathryn Markunas took a bunch of Cadets to see the Harlem Globetrotters play at the Greensboro Coliseum. The entire group enjoyed a great show, and which ended the game in a sudden death overtime against the Generals. As a special treat, the most iconic Globetrotter showed up in the building... Curly Neal. The group also enjoyed a McDonald's stop on the way home.

Scuba also ran on Sunday. Coach John Eife had a long scuba day as he oversaw both waves of scuba. Two sessions of 11 Cadets ran from 9:00-1:00 p.m. and 1:00-5:00 p.m. For both groups, this was their second pool dive. The groups only need to practice their two open water dives and they will have their full lifetime PADI Scuba Diving Certification.

"This is an incredible opportunity for these young men and they are loving every minute of it," Coach Bill Eberly said. "Besides some sleepy eyes from staying up most all the night for the Eye of the Tiger Competition, it was a great day of diving."
