Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,
Hargrave is now moving boldly toward Thanksgiving Break. While Thanksgiving is on the horizon, Hargrave and the Corps of Cadets has a lot of work to do between now and then. When there are important issues to address, I do so at Tuesday Chapel. I do not do this every week. I only do this with items that I deem of importance to the entire Hargrave family. Last week, I did so with media-fueled feeding frenzy surrounding the Ebola virus. This week, I wanted to remind our young men of our Honor Code. Let me share some key points with you. You may well hear from your son about my comments on cheating and plagiarism. This culture is a theme in your son's generation. They are constantly bombarded with cheat codes in video games and media exposure to make this an 'acceptable' concept. Turning the 'blind eye' mentality has made lying, cheating and plagiarism the norm for some segments of society. Hargrave has long standing policies against this type of behavior. The day of matriculation, each Cadet and family were briefed on the Honor Code and signed a pledge to uphold it. If a Cadet violates the Honor Code, they will face a court of their peers with the Hargrave Honor Council. This was stressed to the entire Hargrave Corps of Cadets on Tuesday morning. This behavior is unacceptable.Hargrave sees cheating, lying and plagiarism as serious character issues. Honesty and Integrity are very important, and building integrity into our young men is a key part of building the Whole Person. Hargrave will enforce its Honor Code-- if and when this type of behavior appears. Integrity in the educational process will be maintained. I know I can count on you to help us reinforce this message. Second six weeks interim grading period ends on Friday. If you have any questions, please engage your son's instructors. Dialogue is critical, and engaging your son's instructor will inform him or her of your concerns. The first winter sports game kicks off this week with Hargrave's Postgraduate Basketball team hosting Patrick Henry Community College at home. Winter sports signups went well Tuesday morning. Everyone is looking forward to an exciting winter season. West Point Magazine featured Hargrave in their fall 2014 edition. The article " Candidates to Cadre: Preparatory Schools" highlighted Hargrave as a school focused on college preparation, especially in regards to U.S. Service Academies. I'm proud of Hargrave's ongoing tradition in U.S. Service Academy preparation, which are among the top 10 most difficult universities in the nation to gain acceptance. All of our Hargrave men have access to that educational track if they wish to pursue it.
Best regards,
Don Broome BG, USA (Ret.) President Hargrave Military Academy Twitter: @HargravePrez

Hargrave's Beta Club supported a service effort at God's Storehouse in Danville, Virginia on Thursday, October 23, 2014. Four members of the club, Cadets Tselmeg Ganbold, Ray Inge, III, Sixing Jiao and Micah Mudlaff, used their muscles and pallet jacks to assist in the warehouse's ongoing logistical effort. They also broke down donated packages, sorted items and packed them into boxes.
"It was a wonderful opportunity for our Beta members," Mrs. Trish Martin, Beta Club's Cadet sponsor, said. "Our goal is to make this trip every two weeks so that all of our members will have the chance to do service."
God's Storehouse is a non-profit food pantry that distributes food to those in need in Danville and Pittsylvania County. In addition to food distribution, God's Storehouse also instructs individuals on how to cook healthier meals and how to make their food last longer.

The Hargrave Ethics Bowl team did a great job preparing for their Ethics Bowl competition later this year. They attended a debated competition at Liberty High School, and walked away with a number of awards. The following Cadets competed in the Lincoln Douglas debate format, which is one of the most challenging forensic formats.
Cadet Sixing Jiao claimed second place. Cadet Payne Nunn claimed third place. Cadet Micha Mudlaff placed 4th place. Cadet Paul Joseph took 6th place overall.

Fried Meat on a Stick, NASCAR and Jack-O-Lanterns
| |
Student Activities
On Saturday, October 25, 2014, Mrs. Connie Smith and Ms. Abby Silva took a large group of Cadets to the North Carolina State Fair. The Cadets avoided the questionable fried things on sticks, which annoyed Mrs. Smith. Everyone had fun however, and enjoyed what the large fair had to offer. On Sunday, October 27, 2014, CPT Peter Jensen and Ms. Ashley Hill took the Cadets to a big NASCAR race at the Martinsville Raceway. During the pre-race, they were able to walk on the track, sign the start/finish line and checkout pre-race interviews. Once the race started, it was a great race. There were many wrecks, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed the checkered flag. | Carving pumpkins. |
Sunday also included a pumpkin carving contest. The Cadets created Jack-O-Lanterns with Mrs. Kerry Watts. SAGE Dining Services sponsored its annual pumpkin carving contest. All winners and other entries now grace the dining hall for the week. Cadets Michael Miller and Liam Rafizadeh had not experienced pumpkin carving before, and Cadet Duc Nguyen had never seen a pumpkin. "There was an amazing amount of team effort and creativity!" Watts said. SAGE Dining Staff judged the contest and selected the following winners: Cadets Connor Cox and Rafizadeh, 1st place; Cadet Harry Crosby, 2nd Place; Cadet Miller, 3rd Place; and Cadet Andre Tomlinson, Honorable Mention.
