"Once something is a passion, the motivation is there."
-- Michael Schumacher
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

This is a BIG week. Hargrave--and your Cadet--have been working hard going into our 2014 Parent's Weekend, and there is a lot of stuff to cover.

Hargrave Advanced Placement (AP) Students are taking demanding college-level courses designed to challenge each student and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Each course is a demanding opportunity that stretches each student's organizational and learning skills and provides a class where academic requirements must be balanced with other athletic and extracurricular demands on their time.
AP teachers devote time over and above scheduled class time to help students with these courses. In order to take this challenging learning to the next level Hargrave has designed specific AP Study Halls.

Each AP Class has a designated night that they study together in the Hargrave Library. Opportunities for collaborative work on a common subject is a beneficial study technique for these advanced students and the opportunity to meet together, to discuss, and have peer review and discussions facilitates learning and critical thinking skills that are important in mastering AP course concepts. The study environment in the library is similar to what the Cadets will find in college and gives them more control over their use of their time with less distractions.

Feedback from AP Students after the first week has been extremely positive.

The AP Study Hall nights are: Sunday, AP Physics; Monday, AP Calculus; Tuesday, AP Chemistry; Wednesday, AP U.S. History; Thursday, AP & Dual Enrollment English. If your son is an Day Student taking Hargrave Advanced Placement (AP) courses, I would urge you to strongly consider his attendance at AP Study Hall.

Scott
Last Friday, Hargrave celebrated the enshrinement of Mike Scott '07 to the Postgraduate Basketball Hall of Fame during the 2014 Meet the Tigers event. Scott attended the University of Virginia and was then drafted by the NBA Atlanta Hawks. The PG Basketball team also provided the Academy with a skills competition and scrimmage game.

On Sunday, the Academy celebrated its benefactors and donors at the 26th Annual Order of the Sabre. It was an outstanding event that a number of Cadets also attended. Our Cadets were (as always) the highlight of the evening... from the Color Guard to Band/Highlanders (Chief Gordon Kippola--they LOVED the music!)... to Cadet Major Payne Nunn's address on "Why Hargrave is Important."

We inducted three Lifetime Donors: Mr. and Mrs. Jon Ness; Mr. and Mrs. Jackie R. Atkinson, Jr. '93; and Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kratz '89. We inducted eight Annual Donors: Mr. Thomas Messinger; Cadet David Kiesnowski '20; Mr. and Mrs. Joshua T. Haymes, Jr. '52; Mr. Lawrence Robinson; Mr. A.W. Hamilton '00; Mr. Aaron Book; Mr. Ben Wall '92; and Mr. Brett Thomas. Lastly, we inducted Fred and Dianne Mills (parents of Parker Mills '01 and Kirby Mills '03) into the Senior Benefactor ranks for their sustained and generous giving.

Athletics
Golf Classic 2014.
While the Hargrave weather has been exceptionally wet this week, the Academy did manage to hold its Athletics Golf Classic 2014. This annual golf tournament provides our athletics department with additional funding for Cadet athletic teams. While the course was a wet, it didn't stop the competitive nature of our participants and supporters. The rain held off and it was a lot of fun. It was a great day on the links supporting Hargrave.

Parent's Weekend 2014 is here. I hope you're ready for a great weekend. There are a lot of highlights. First, Hargrave's Distinguished Speaker, Carl. D. Dvorak, joins us at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel on Friday, October 17. Dvorak is a retired Federal Senior Executive-4 who served extensively with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.

Later on Friday, the Parent/Teacher conferences follow from 1:00-6:00 p.m. and the Parent/Cadet Dinner runs from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Cadets can go off campus for dinner as well. Passes will be issued for Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Parent/Teacher conferences begin at 8:00 a.m. and run until 10:00 a.m. The New Cadet Crest Ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. on the Chapel lawn. College Counseling has a seminar for parents at 9:30 a.m. in the auditorium, which is followed by a presentation from Dean Walter Sullivan entitled "NCAA College Eligibility for High School Student/Athlete."

The main event, the Dress Parade, begins at 11:00 a.m. At the Dress Parade, the Cadets are recognized for academic achievement, along with an Eagle Scout pinning. Parents are invited to the field for these awards, and I highly encourage you to be there!

Alpha Company named Company of the 1st Six Weeks.
Check-out follows the parade. All Cadets must return to campus no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2014.

The Hargrave Parent Council also has a number of activities planned for the event. Please check out their auction, raffle and their Company gathering events. They also have a fundraising effort planned with Ruby Tuesday. They are a great group of parents who render great support to your Academy.

Congratulations to Alpha Company! They were named the Company of 1st Six Weeks. Great job on your achievement.

I look forward to meeting everyone this weekend!

Hargrave Cadets support Stop Hunger Now
10,000 Bags of Food Packaged

Hargrave Cadets assisted a Stop Hunger Now (SHN) food packaging campaign on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Chatham Baptist Church. 10,000 meals were packaged by a large number of volunteers.

Mrs. Trish Martin, Hargrave's mathematics chairperson and Cadet event sponsor, Coach Ben Paris, Hargrave's Athletic Director, his family and ten Hargrave Cadets assisted in the SHN effort.

Cadets Couldrey and Jiao work on the packaging line.
Participating Hargrave Cadets included: Braden Barnett of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Jackson Couldrey of Tamarindos, Dominican Republic; Harry Crosby of Cumberland Foreside, Maine; Sixing Jiao of Kunming, China; Ryan Phillips of Naples, Florida; Talbot Powell of Charleston, West Virginia; Zachary Ruffin of Morehead City, North Carolina; Cameron Smith-Ebelt of Danville, Virginia; Francisco Velasco-Lang of Madrid, Spain; and Turner Wall of Chatham, Virginia.

"(We) worked for several hours to package 10,000 meals to be distributed by Stop Hunger Now," Martin said. "Many local community members, various local churches, and Chatham Hall also participated in this event. The Cadets did an amazing job helping out by loading the bins with rice and soy, packaging the individual meal packs, sealing bags, packing and loading boxes, and loading the truck. A gong was sounded after every 1,000 meals packaged with great shouts of celebration by all involved. It was a wonderful event and the Cadets did an excellent job in supporting a great cause."

SHN is an international hunger relief agency committed to end hunger for more than 15 years. Since 1998, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world.

SHN created its meal packaging program in 2005. The program perfected an assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix, which includes 21 essential vitamins and minerals, into small meal packets. Each meal costs only 29 cents. Meals have a shelf-life of two years. SHN works with international partners that ship and distribute the meals in-country.

SHN's packaging operation is mobile and goes wherever volunteers are located. It can be adapted to accommodate as few as 25 and as many as 500 volunteers at a time. The use of volunteers for product packaging provides SHN an extremely cost-effective operation, while increasing global hunger and food insecurity awareness.

2014 Meet the Tigers
Mike Scott '07 inducted into Hall of Fame

Scott reveals his Hall of Fame signage.
The Hargrave Postgraduate Basketball team open the start of their season with its 2014 Meet the Tigers event on Friday, October 10, 2014 in the Davis Gymnasium. The entire Corps of Cadets participated in the event that was both entertaining and rewarding.

The honored guest of the 2014 Meet the Tigers was NBA star Mike Scott '07. Scott was celebrated as he was added to the Hargrave Postgraduate Basketball Hall of Fame. Scott attended the University of Virginia and was then drafted by the NBA Atlanta Hawks. He plays for the Hawks as a forward, #32. During the 2013-2014 season, Scott led the Hawks in scoring nine times, rebounding twice and assists once. He was a team leader in games played, while ranking fourth in FGM and sixth in points per game. He scored in double-figures in 13 consecutive games.

The PG Basketball team also provided the Academy with a skills competition/demonstration, audience participation and fantastic scrimmage game.
Faculty/Staff vs. Cadets Basketball Game
Age and Experience defeats Cadet Beauty

On Tuesday, October 14, 2014, a select group of timid Hargrave Cadets were thrown into the maws of an experienced and capable All-Star Hargrave faculty and staff squad of dominating basketball players. The event was exceptionally entertaining as the faculty, staff and Cadets engaged in a great night of basketball, sportsmanship and fun.

A concession stand was also available for the Cadets, and the pre-ordered pizza more than satisfied the high energy crowd.

Unfortunately for the Cadets, they lost 62-58. Their ability to 'trash talk' has been effectively neutralized by the faculty and staff. The Cadets now return to focusing on their schoolwork and grades. Maybe next year, Cadets?

A Halloween Haunt and Shopping
Student Activities

On Saturday, October 11, 2014, Coach Brandon Owen and CPT Ed Ott travelled with the Cadets to King's Dominion for the Halloween Haunt. King's Dominion transforms their park for Halloween scares, featuring mazes and scary things, in addition to dressed up rides, shows and other attractions.

CPT Ott said "On the way home I could hear laughing conversations about getting frightened by the park spooks (zombies, cannibals, evil clowns, etc.) and a couple (of Cadets) delighted to tell me that they got to receive attention as protector for some girls while going through the haunted houses," Ott said. "The rides were amazing, the after-dark spectacles and spooks were entertaining and, as far as I could tell, our boys represented us well."

On Sunday, October 12, 2014, CPT Rich Arena and Dr. Steve Griffin took the Cadets to the Danville Mall for some shopping and freetime. These trips are actually very popular with the Cadets since they get off campus and they can chart their course within the mall. They had a great time.

Unfortunately, the Sunday Skeet Shooting event was cancelled due to rain.
