"Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in." -- Andrew Jackson |
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,
As I begin this newsletter I wanted to share an email from a parent that arrived on Tuesday morning. "Great day watching the lunar eclipse just as Hargrave was raising the flag with the cadets at attention. It was amazing for the total eclipse was timed precisely to the everyday routine of the cadets."
You can visualize the total lunar eclipse and our young men at Mess I formation, rendering Honors to the Nation. What a great mental picture! Hargrave 2014 Parent's Weekend is quickly approaching. The first six week grading period ends this week, and the grades and course loads determine which Cadet earns a spot on the President's List, the Dean's List or the President's Commendation List. For new Moms and Dads, academic recognition happens during the Parent's Weekend parade on Saturday morning. Parents join their son on the parade field for pinning the academic stars on their son's uniform. On Friday, October 17, Hargrave's Fall 2014 Distinguished Speaker will address the Corps of Cadets, faculty, staff and interested families at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel. Mr. Carl. D. Dvorak is a recently retired Federal Senior Executive-4 who served with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. He has been very active and involved protecting America around the globe. He will certainly be the most interesting man in the room, and I think the Cadets will enjoy their time with him. Mr. Dvorak's full biography is below. | Hargrave Robotics Team Practice |
The Robotics team is looking very strong. Check out this video during their practice session this week. They are an impressive group of builders, programmers and drivers. CPT Richard Arena is doing a great job with this group! At Chapel this week we recognized a host of young men. First we inducted seven Cadets into the Presidential Ambassadors. Then, we recognized the Character Cadet of the month, who best exemplifies the Character Trait of 'Responsibility'. Next, the Battalion Commander and staff recognized the Cadets of the month from each Company. Finally, we recognized the varsity and junior varsity athletes of the month. (All stories follow.) I am very proud of all of them! In closing, the Dean reminded the Cadets about this Saturday--it's SAT time! We want all our young men who will take the SAT to be focused on doing their very best. They must have their ticket and a photo ID--these are College Board requirements--to take the test and there are NO exceptions.Best regards,
Don Broome BG, USA (Ret.) President Hargrave Military Academy Twitter: @HargravePrez

Hargrave Parent Council
Now that the schedule is available for Parents Weekend, there are some special activities you won't want to miss. If you arrive Friday morning, you can hear the Distinguished Speaker at 11:00 in the Cheatham Chapel. Mr. Carl D. Dvorak, Senior Intelligence Service (Federal Senior Executive-3, Retired) of the Central Intelligence Agency is our guest. Later that afternoon, our Varsity Cross Country team would love to have some Tiger Spirit and cheers as they race against Carlisle at 5:00 p.m. at Rogers-Fuller Field. And, don't forget the Meet and Greet with TAC Officers from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, CPT Corey Hayden will hold a College Counseling Seminar for Parents along with Dean Walter Sullivan (LTC USA, Ret.) providing an update on NCAA College Eligibility for High School Student/Athletes. | The Breast Cancer Awareness Basket |
Of course, the Parent Council Silent Auction will be underway so don't miss an opportunity to stop by and bid on some great items. We will have a variety of items ranging from gift baskets filled with snacks and baked goods that any Cadet would love. There is also a vacation in Williamsburg! To show off our school spirit, there will be a large display of handmade items sporting our school colors along with accessories showing off the Hargrave tiger and paw print. Stay tuned for more items in next week's newsletter and last minute ideas for those of you who might want to bring an item to place in the auction when you register on Friday. For our families that haven't had experienced the Fall Dress Parade, you are in for a treat. The boys are working very hard in parade practice, and to see them in their full military dress uniform will leave quite an impression. I can't guarantee you won't have a tear when you see your son and don't forget to bring your camera! See everyone soon! Sincerely, Cheryl Hancock, DPTParent Council President Hargrave Military Academy 434-548-2673

The Golden Goal and Human Domination
| |
Student Activities
On Saturday, October 4, 2014, Coach Bill Eberly, Coach Jeremy Eubank and Coach Aaron Mekker took both the varsity and JV soccer teams along with other interested Cadet to watch Virginia Tech (VT) take on Syracuse in a great college soccer battle. The game was play on Virginia Tech's Thompson Field. While the mountain temperature dipped into the low 40s, both D1 soccer powerhouse teams put on a great display of soccer skill. Syracuse dominated the game in time of possession, but the tough VT Defense had a bend but not break mentality keeping the ball out of the net. VT did have a few moments on goal with their speedy forwards giving them some great opportunities. It was 0-0 at the end of Regulation. As the game went into golden goal overtime, the Cadets went from cheering on VT to just hoping someone scored so they could get out of the cold. When Syracuse scored with four minutes left in the second overtime period, the Cadets went crazy cheering Syracuse and then ran to the bus to find heat. It was a great, but cool, trip for soccer fans. | The Hargrave Paintball crew. |
On Sunday, October 5, 2014 MAJ William Wiebking took a group of Cadets to Big Pearl Paintball in Glasgow, Virginia. The Cadets participated in three missions involving the Black Hawk Down scenario. The missions were based on the U.S. recovery effort of U.S. helicopter crash. The Battle of Mogadishu, more commonly referred to as Black Hawk Down, was part of Operation Gothic Serpent and was fought on October 3-4 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between forces of the United States supported by UNOSOM II and Somali militiamen loyal to the self-proclaimed president-to-be Mohamed Farrah Aidid, who had support from armed civilian fighters. A movie was made of the battle. The scenarios were played a day after the 1993 anniversary. Unfortunately, the Americans lost all three scenarios. Where the American paintball team lost, the humans won. The 5th and final scenario of the day featured a zombie apocalypse. One human was left at the end of the time limit, which meant humanity survived. The last person had to do a lot of running to escape the hail of incoming paint. The Cadet de-zombified with a stop at Backyard Burger on the way home. Warm food and cold shakes were the perfect compliment to a great day at Big Pearl Paintball. Cadet energy remained high all the way until... Study Hall.
