"Freedom lies in being bold." -- Robert Frost |
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,
October is here. That means gorgeous Fall foliage on campus for Parent's Weekend. Along with the Fall foliage, I would like to see more Academic Stars pinned to Cadets blouses during the Parent's Weekend Parade.
| A Parent's Weekend pinning. |
The faculty and staff at Hargrave will work with you to encourage your Cadet. We want each of them to work hard and set clear, attainable goals. Between you and us, we'll establish an expectation that we 'expect' him to improve his grades, GPA or SAT score. That will lead to more Cadets achieving Cadets Dean's List, or President's List. Once, they understand that 'it's possible for me to do this' then, it will become the norm for him to achieve.
Today gives us about one and one half weeks to affect the grades for the first six week grading period. Then, it's one week until Parent's Weekend. There is not much time--but there is time enough, to make something happen! Congratulations to Cadet Harry Crosby on his recognition in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program selection process. His impressive performance on the Preliminary SAT/National merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in 2013 placed him in the top 5% of the students in the country. That is a HUGE accomplishment! Congratulations again, Harry! Last Spring, I discussed the 'Competitive Zone'. College admissions personnel and future employers look for candidates with strong qualities in three areas. They are: scholar-athlete-leader (SAL). You don't have to be at the top of every category--but, you do need to be within the 'Competitive Zone'. Hargrave provides every young man an opportunity to excel in all three of those areas. Early in the academic year is a good time to begin focusing on SAL qualities and build the resume.
October's character theme is Responsibility. Hargrave will focus on accountability in projects/work and in leadership.
I look forward to seeing everyone for Parent's Weekend.
Don Broome BG, USA (Ret.) President Hargrave Military Academy

Hargrave Parent Council
Parent's Weekend is just around the corner and families will once again gather at Hargrave for a special weekend of festivities. It is an exciting time to spend with our sons, meet the teachers and see the first dress parade of the school year! The Parent Council cannot wait for all of you to see the completion of our most recent project, re-facing the landscaping around the Chapel. The fall colors should really be coming along, too! | The Hargrave Parent Council Silent Auction |
Parent's Weekend will be a wonderful opportunity for families to support our fundraising goals and an excellent opportunity to meet your Parent Council members. We have been very busy planning our biggest event of the year, the Silent Auction. The auction will be held in the English Lounge in Camden Hall from 1:00-6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17th and ending on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. Winners will be posted immediately following the dress parade at Camden Hall and down in the Military Office. Please return directly to Camden Hall after the dress parade to collect your winnings. Stay tuned for a list of wonderful items you can win. In honor of Breast Cancer month and in addition to our annual auction, Parent Council will be hosting a Breast Cancer Raffle. The winner will receive a beautiful basket filled with shirts, totes, handmade Afghans, hats and scarves, to name a few, along with a prime seating spot at the Mother's Day parade. Raffle tickets are currently on sale. The prices of the tickets are as follows: one (1) ticket, $5; three (3) tickets, $10; six (6) tickets, $25; and 12 tickets, $50. Email or call me and I will tell you how to obtain your tickets before the weekend's festivities. The winner of the raffle will be announced after the conclusion of the Auction. We look forward to seeing everyone very soon. Sincerely, Cheryl Hancock, DPTParent Council President Hargrave Military Academy 434-548-2673

Crosby Named Commended Student | |
2015 National Merit Scholarship Program
| Crosby recognized by BG Don Broome (USA, Ret.), Hargrave's president. |
Hargrave Military Academy Cadet 2LT Harry Crosby has been named a 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Student. His achievement was recognized before the Hargrave Corps of Cadets on Tuesday, September 30, 2014.
Over 1.5 million students took the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in October 2013 and entered the National Merit Scholarship Program. The effort is a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).
In April 2014, Crosby was identified as one of the top 50,000 highest scorers on the 2013 PSAT/NMSQT. Of that number, approximately 16,000 students were selected as Semifinalists on a state representational basis.
Crosby qualified with 34,000 students as a NMSC Commended Student on a basis of a National Selection Index score of 201, applicable to all program participants without regard to state-by-state distribution. Although they will not continue in the 2015 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of the 1.5 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/NMSQT. It is an outstanding achievement for a high school student.
"Harry's NMSC Commended Student designation is a testament to his tremendous work ethic both in and out of the classroom," said LTC Walter Sullivan (USA, Ret.), Hargrave's academic dean. "He is a bright, extremely capable and well-rounded young man. We are all looking to strong accomplishments throughout the remainder of his senior year."
Cadet Crosby is a Hargrave senior cadet officer and a second lieutenant serving with the Academy's Delta Company. As a high school junior, he had the Highest Academic Average for a Boarding Student and the Highest Academic Average - 11th Grade for the 2013-2014 Academic year. He is the winner of Hargrave's 2014 Rensselaer Science and Math Award. In 2014 Cadet Crosby achieved at perfect score of 800 on the math SAT and is an AP Scholar with three scores of 5 on AP Exams. He attended Virginia Boy's State in the summer of 2014.
He is a 2014 Virginia Tech Leadership Conference participant, a winner of the 2014 Bill McMillan American Spirit Award and the Martha Rucker Prize, both Academy awards. In addition to numerous subject awards, he is a varsity member of the Hargrave Cross Country team and a multiple sport participant. His parents are Joe and Jennifer Crosby of Cumberland Foreside, Maine.

Order of the Sabre
| |
Sabre Banquet Sunday, October 12, 2014
Hargrave Military Academy's growth and success over the past 26 years could not have been possible without the school's generous alumni, parents and friends whose sustains Hargrave as America's premier military boarding school.
During the 1987-1988 school year, the Academy chose to honor those donors with exceptional lifetime giving, those with annual giving at or above the $1,000 level and those who have made planned gifts to the school with induction into appropriate levels of the Order of the Sabre.
We are proud to continue this tradition just as we are proud of the many who continue the tradition of providing the very best for the Cadets.

Student Activities
On Saturday, September 27, 2014, CPT Aaron Book, CW4 Gordon Kippola and CPT Richard Arena took the Cadets to the Pittsylvania County fair in Ringgold. The Cadets stated "the rides were awesome," and a few of them were happier with a small lunch. The 4-H exhibit showed off some of the region's prize livestock. A wildlife exhibit also took place when the group arrived. We also got to see some of the work done by local artisans and enjoyed some spectacular people watching. On Sunday, September 28, 2014, CPT Aaron Mekker the Cadets to Old Salem, North Carolina for a Segway ride and tour of the Old City. Some of the riding was cruising to historical sites and the rest was just cruising on the greenways having a blast on two wheels. Sunday also featured a big campus paintball event. MAJ Tim Oditt chaperoned some fun on Hargrave's paintball field for some "no pain, no gain" paintball time on Hargrave's woods course. The course features built-in bunker locations, strategically placed giant electrical spools and multi room forts.
