2014 Summer School and Camp Final Week

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

The Summer of 2014 has been a great summer for so many of your sons. Many of them have made some smart realizations about who they are and what they can do as individuals. There has been a lot of growth in the classrooms. Those classrooms are staffed with many of same faculty that a young man will learn with during a regular academic year. Many have been introduced to the 'I can' attitude, and quite of few of them have discovered they like it.

Hargrave coaches have produced gallons of sweat from your sons this summer. Our sports camps worked on a variety of skills and drills with many of our young men. Many of them are excited about their upcoming high school sports seasons with their new conditioning and training. The military certification and adventure camps also had another phenomenal year, balancing the needs of academics and very active camp schedules.

On barracks and campus, your sons were mentored by our staff. Clear expectations with a focus on each young man provides a great bridge for character development and personal growth. I had to pleasure of hearing a lot of good stories from our staff--as well as your sons. I think you'll find your son has matured greatly during his short time at Hargrave.

It is hard to believe that we are near the end.

On Sunday morning, all parents are invited to a Parent's Breakfast prior to the Chapel Service and Awards CeremonyThe Breakfast begins and 7:45 a.m. and will be at the President's House (37 Hargrave Blvd.), I invite you to come, enjoy food, talk with some of the faculty and staff, meet other parents and celebrate the end of a great summer session.

Our last Sunday chapel begins at 9:00 a.m on July 27. This is a great time to watch Hargrave Chaplain Joe Moran in action. His sermons are always enlightening and enjoyable. The 2014 Summer Awards Ceremony will occur immediately after Chaplain Moran's sermon concludes. We know that our students like having mom and dad in attendance when they receive recognition for summer achievement.

If your son advanced himself this summer... If he adapted to the Hargrave structure and grew... If he enjoyed a clear, well-engaged day... then, please meet with our Admissions Team. Everything that he gained this summer can continue this Fall.

Hargrave is about building up young men, providing them direction and encouraging them to be more than they thought possible. The Academy does its best to remove distractions and create an environment for success. It is success that your son learns.

I hope to see you and your son again this Fall.

Best Regards,

Don Broome

Chaplain's Summer Recordings

Hargrave serves the whole person, and that is especially true for each young man's spiritual development. Hargrave Chaplain Joe Moran records his sermons for parents who wish to hear his message to their sons. Check them out:

Hargrave Coach Bill Eberly works with student Benjamin Perrin to overcome his fear during his first rappel on Hargrave's climbing tower during Hargrave's 2014 Summer School and Camp. Perrin realizes quickly that a safe rappel is fun, and that he is going to be OK. Watch the transformation.
Rafting, Apes, Slides and Paintball
Student Activities

On Friday, July 18, 2014, the Adventure camp departed for the Ace Adventure Resort in West Virginia. Coach Bill Eberly and Coach Will Moran took the group for camping and whitewater rafting on the New River. Sleep was at a premium as the students were excited about the outing.

"We sat around the campfire telling ghost stories and cooked marshmallows. I had a Cadet come up to me and say, 'Coach, this is the best time I've had in my entire life!' It's really cool to take a group of young men, where some have never camped or rafted or enjoyed nature in such an intense level, and watch them just drink it in. Its truly a rewarding experience," Coach Eberly said. "It was a chilly day on Saturday, so we rented all the guys neoprene jackets and they were worth their weight in gold. We were comfortably able to enjoy every Class 3, 4 and 5 rapids that were thrown at us. The guys were smiling from ear to ear as the trip went on and didn't want the day to end.

"When we got back from the rapids, we gave them about three hours to enjoy the lake at the Ace Resort, where they went down zip lines into the water, launched each other on the super blob and climbed on all the inflatable rock walls and obstacles much like you would see on the popular show wipe out. The day ended with a wonderful dinner buffet where we gobbled up (a whole) pig."

The students literally ate an entire smoked pig. They also had shrimp and steak for the big meal.

Later Friday evening, Mrs. Jennifer Oditt, MAJ Scott Roach and Ms. Michele Shull chaperoned a large group of students for the movie "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes." Along with the movie, the students enjoyed dinner at Ci Ci's Pizza, which features an all-you-can-eat pizza, pasta and dessert buffet. It was a good movie, and the students got their fill of pizza.

On Saturday, July 19, 2014, Dr. Jim Tung, Mrs. Cynthia Tung and Coach John Eife took a large group of students to Wet 'n Wild Emerald Pointe in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is a large water park.

The day started with a food buffet filled with burgers, grilled chicken and desserts. After lunch, the students left the group area to explore the water park. Socializing with young ladies was just as much a top activity as the slides. A second Wet 'n Wild trip is scheduled for the early fall in the regular academic year.

On Sunday, July 20, 2014, CPT Aaron Book hosted fast and furious action on the Hargrave paintball field. Overcast skies kept the summer heat at bay while the students worked up a sweat on both the woods course and the speedball course. Hargrave's wood course is filled with bunkers and forts set in the woods. The speedball course uses an inflatable system to create a course in an open field, and it was very popular with the students.
