"We're the mecca of private education here in southern Virginia, and Hargrave is the crown jewel of that."
--State Senator William Stanley

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

Happy Thanksgiving! Excitement is building on campus towards Friday. This evening Ms. Kerry held our annual Thanksgiving Dinner. As always, it was excellent. I'm certain tonight's study hall was extra challenging for the Cadets. All that great food and extra helpings of turkey that I saw some of them eat.

Hargrave was delighted to host Capt. Richard "Todd" Gatlin on Monday. He is Acting Director for U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) International Affairs. He has a mathematics background, and addressed several of our math classes. He provided a lesson on what many students don't often hear, and that is how math is used in the real world. Capt. Gatlin provided a lot of insight to the USCG's use of math in the everyday performance of their duties.

When we return from Thanksgiving Break, Hargrave has a special treat for the Cadets. Our third Distinguished Speaker, Dr. David M. Kennedy, will address the Corps of Cadets. Dr. Kennedy is Stanford University's Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History, Emeritus. He is a Pulitzer Prize winning author and a very well respected historian. His address is sure to be insightful.  Please join us on December 8, 2013 at 6:30 P.M. in Cheatham Chapel.

The Eye of the Tiger (EOT) competition also kicked off last week. The participating Cadets have already been in the pool for water survival and on a 5K march. This is our second year of the competition. It is a fitting month to start the EOT since the character theme for November is Courage.

When we return, December's theme is Fairness.

On Tuesday morning I asked your sons to think before they act over the break, and to be safe. These are points that we will address a few more times prior to their departure.

Please have a joyous and safe Thanksgiving with your sons.

Best Regards,

Don Broome

Happy Thanksgiving!
Hargrave Parent Council

The Parent Council would like to wish our Hargrave Family a very Happy Thanksgiving. This is a time to take pause and think about the true gift of giving. To see people giving their time and resources to help others in need is indeed a blessing and something to be thankful for. In that spirit, I am also thankful for the opportunity that Hargrave provides to our sons, giving them the foundation to prepare for their life journey ahead.

Please be safe as you gather with your family and loved ones with the holiday season upon us. I know the boys are ready for this break. Encourage them to stay focused during those few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It will make such a difference as they prepare for semester exams. Enjoy your time together and have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Lisa Olver

Math in Boats
Capt. Todd Gatlin USCG

Gatlin
Captain Richard 'Todd' Gatlin
of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) visited campus on Monday, November 18, 2013 to discuss mathematics, especially as it pertains to the U.S. Coast Guard. His lecture covered several classes over three different blocks. Capt. Gatlin is currently the Acting Director of the USCG International Affairs. He was warmly welcomed by the Cadets.

Capt. Gatlin has served the USCG since 1986, he has seen extensive travel world wide as an USCG officer, serving in Haiti, the Republic of Korea, the Dominican Republic and the Middle East. He has also served at numerous USCG Stations in the States.

He was named the 1997-1998 Instructor of the Year by Corp of Cadets at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he taught as a Mathematics Instructor.

"The Coast Guard uses math every single day," Capt. Gatlin said. " How do we use math for Search and Rescue? We have things called Probability of success; Probability of detection and Probability of survivability."

The three determinations are important for determining which USCG asset, boat, helicopter or aircraft, to employ in a search and how to employ them.

"Math makes you an analytical thinker. It makes you a process thinker," Capt. Gatlin stressed.

Cadets Compete in Ethics Competition

The Ethics Team
A Hargrave team participated in the University of North Carolina - Triangle High School Ethics Bowl on Sunday, November 17, 2013 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This was Hargrave's first foray into ethics competitions. The team had bad luck getting seeded against some top performing schools, but achieved mission by going, participating and building key initial experience. The team was coached by Mrs. Dianna Lavoie and Sgt.Maj. Harold Hofer.

"We held our own, but as luck would have it we drew the second place national team during our first round," Coach Dianna Lavoie said. "We did well, but of course lost. However our point spread was not so bad. We had a 'by' second round and then drew one of last year's top teams for the third round, which we lost as well. However, our point spread was even closer, so that was the good news. The boys were happy, but understand what they must do next year to be competitive."

East Chapel Hill High School narrowly defeated Triangle Area Homeschool in the Ethics Bowl.

The team debated the following topics.

Round one
Legalization of Marijuana
Converting to Synthetic Meats

Round Three
Forced Fatherhood (Should a man who fathered a child be held responsible for that child even if he wants the mother to get an abortion?)
The Draft and Conscientious Objectors
Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum
The Study and Travel Club
The Hargrave Study and Travel Club
On Saturday, November 16, 2013, Mrs. Jane Kendrick and Ms. Jessica Yager took seven members of the Study and Travel Club to visit the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum in Chantilly, Virgina. We departed Hargrave at 6:00 a.m. and returned a little before 9:00 p.m. The boys were able to spend five hours at the museum viewing and reading about different types of planes used by civilians, military personnel and the government. The Cadets were also able to view the Space Shuttle Discovery, which is showcased at the museum.

The Cadets enjoyed the museum and found it to be very educational. The Cadets also watched a short IMAX film called Air Fighters, which followed a fighter pilot through air combat training. Finally, each student was given tickets to do the flight simulator. Some students liked it so much, they bought more tickets and did it again.

Bobcats, Heat and Thor

Hargrave on the Court!
On Saturday, November 16, 2013, Coach Bill Eberly, Mrs. Barbara Loney, CPT Michael Williamson, Chaplain Joe Moran and his wife Deirdre Moran took a full charter bus of Cadets to Charlotte, North Carolina to watch the NBA Charlotte Bobcats take on the Miami Heat. It was a professional basketball showdown.

The group watched Pacific Rim on the trip down and Oblivion for the return. The movies helped eat up the road and kept the energy high. The group had courtside seats for all the warm-up action and the cheerleaders. Just prior to the game, the Cadets were called onto the court to hold the giant American flag.

"Following the National Anthem, we went to our seats to watch a really good game. It was close through the end of the third quarter. In fact, the Bobcats were only down by two with five minutes left in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was owned by the Heat, and the Heat ended up winning by a score of 97-81.  Lebron scored 30, which a lot of our guys liked to watch.

"The Cadets absolutely loved going and having all the extra perks to the game. My motto is that they should be able to do at Hargrave things that they would never have a chance to do any other time in their lives. Saturday night was one of those nights."

On Sunday, November 17, 2013, LTC Joe Merricks and Coach Lawrence Robinson took another charter bus to see the new blockbuster movie, "Thor." It was an action packed movie and the Cadets enjoyed the all-you-can-eat pizza buffet at CiCi's Pizza. Pizza is always a big hit.
