Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,
| Happy Halloween from Hargrave! |
Happy Halloween! So far, it is business as usual for a Hargrave Thursday. That means academics, sports and study. But, we'll have some fun, too. Several faculty and staff members changed into their alter egos. The Cadets were able to 'vote' on the costumes and everyone had a good laugh. Mrs. Kerry Watts will probably have a sweet or two in the Mess Hall at Mess III. There might be candy floating around later in Study Hall later in the evening.
As we head in November, the second six week interims are already here. The weekend is closed with academic classes on Saturday. I know the Cadets are already looking forward to the holidays, but it will be 'nose-to-the-grindstone' until then. The second six weeks ends right before Thanksgiving.
On Tuesday, the Corps of Cadets participated in a Winter Sports sign-up following Chapel Service. Varsity football players have one more away game against Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot school in Powhatan, Virginia on Friday. That is the last contest for our Fall teams.
We have two upcoming guest speakers that will bring great messages to our young men.
| Scheibner | On Sunday, November 3, 2013, Hargrave hosts Steve Scheibner. Scheibner was a pilot originally scheduled to fly on September 11, 2011. Scheibner will share his story and address how God has been working in his life since that tragic day. He is now the President of Characterhealth Corporation, a non-profit conference ministry aimed at equipping parents to train the next generation of character-health leaders.
Marco Caceres '76, one of our own, will be the Chapel speaker on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 for International Education Week. Caceres resides in Fairfax, Virginia and is Senior Analyst and Director of Space Studies with the Teal Group Corporation. He is the founder of ProjectHonduras.com and co-founder of the annual Conference on Honduras. He has used his communication skills to unite the missions of NGOs, Humanitarian aid and religious groups seeking to improve the quality of life of and provide greater opportunities for the Honduran people. Caceres is currently the editor of Honduras Weekly and is the author of "The Good Coup: The Overthrow of Manuel Zelaya in Honduras."
All parents are welcomed to participate. Have a great week.
Best Regards,
Don Broome

Bobcats, Mavericks and a Movie
| | Student Activities
On Saturday, October 27, 2013, Coach Bill Eberly and his family took the Cadets to the North Carolina State Fair. It is a large fair with an 'insane' amount of traffic, but once inside it was a lot of fun. During the four hour visit, the Cadets enjoyed eating the fair food, checking out the live stock tents and even seeing a cool Motocross competition. Of course, there were also rides. "It was a GREAT day," Eberly said.
On Sunday, october 28, 2013, Ms. Valerie Draud and Coach John Eife took a group of Cadets to the NASCAR RACE at the Martinsville Speedway. Everyone watched as Jeff Gordon picked up his first win of the season, using a late pass of Matt Kenseth. Gordon snapped a 32-race losing streak. "It was great watching him burn out on Victory Lane with his crew cheering him on ...Go Jeff Gordon!"
