Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

Fantastic--no other word will describe it! The Hargrave Parent Council has done it again! The beautification effort they planned for the Academy's main sign and the front of Camden Hall look just fantastic. The scope of their ambition was greatly expanded over past efforts, as they included work on almost the entire front lawn. It was a hot, long day for them as each volunteer contributed about ten hours to the total project efforts. That's 100 hours of work! That is a tough Saturday, but the Cadets are aware of the effort. They can't miss it.

20130904-Thank-YouIf you see the following parents, please let them know that you appreciate their efforts on behalf of all the Cadets.

Hargrave's Founders' Day is scheduled for Monday, September 9, 2013 from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. This is Hargrave's birthday, and the Academy makes time to celebrate. If you're a graduate, former student, current/past parent or just a friend of the Academy, come join us!  It's a great time to remember our heritage and have some fun while doing so. We eat lunch and share several large birthday cakes. The Corps of Cadets also participates in healthy company level competitions that build unit esprit. Please join us.

If you haven't seen it, Hargrave's Facebook page now has a new administrator. Mrs. Michele Shull has been posting some fun and interesting things from the faculty side of the school. Many of you, as well as I, are enjoying these new posts. If you have not 'liked' Hargrave's Facebook page, please take a moment to do so. You'll start seeing some fun items being posted to your wall.

During our summer school and camp program, Hargrave's new chaplain, Reverend Joe Moran, recorded his weekly sermons for the parents and families of our Cadets. It was very popular, and we've decided to continue the effort into the fall. The first of his recordings follow. I hope you enjoy hearing them as much as we enjoy having Chaplain Moran on campus.

Hargrave is now in full swing. Sports teams are engaging their competitors. Student Activities is sending trips out on the weekends. Study Hall is completely engaged. We're off to great start with a great group of young men.

Best Regards,

Don Broome

Beautification Project Transforms Camden Hall

Hargrave Parent Council

20130904-PC-BeautificationParent Council members and volunteers arrived at Hargrave on Saturday, August 31, 2013, to complete a beautification project designed to improve the entrance to and around Camden Hall. A great big "thanks" goes out to Catherine and Eric Peterson, Cheryl Hancock, Logan Barker, Stuart Lovelace and Rosa Garcia, Parent Council Landscape and Beautification Chair.

These folks worked tirelessly clearing brush, planting shrubs and flowers and sprucing up the entrance to our beloved Camden Hall. And they did it in one day, from start to finish!

Please be sure to fill out and turn in your Volunteer Form  provided at matriculation. You may send it directly to the school to the attention of HMA Parent Council President OR scan and send it directly to me: lisa@sundanceeast.com.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Lisa Olver

Parent Council President

(The beautification effort will continue later in the month during the Academy's annual Weekend of Service, September 13, 14, and 15, 2013. In this annual event, graduates and former students return to campus for fellowship and the opportunity to give back to their school. Most of the work is 'sweat equity,' and helps create a better educational environment for the current Hargrave Cadets.)

The Chaplain's Message

Reverend Joe Moran, Hargrave's new Chaplain, began recording his sermons to the Cadets over Hargrave's 2013 Summer School and Camp. While popular with the Cadets live, they were even more appreciated by parents.

A Back to School Bash and Water Slides
Student Activities

This weekend was a great weekend for student activities.

On Saturday, August 31, 2013, Mrs. Dianna Lavoie and Ms. Blair Sutton took charter bus of Cadets to Salem Academy, a girl's school that hosted a "Back to School Bash."
"The guys made new friends and danced the night away," Mrs. Lavoie said. "I Would also like to recognize Douglas Wright and Will Glenn who were a great help to us!"

On Sunday, September 1, 2013, Coach Bill Eberly and MAJ Bill Wiebking took another charter bus to Greensboro's Wet and Wild Water park, Emerald Point. The Cadets had a great time and represented themselves well. The Cadets had all-you-can drink wristbands, which helped keep them hydrated, and two meal passes. A thunderstorm ended the fun a little early at the end, but the time they did have on the slides still made it a great trip.

Hargrave Varsity Football vs. Chatham High School
Hargrave Varsity Football vs. Chatham High School

On Friday, August 30, 2013, the Hargrave varsity football team opened their season against Chatham High School with a 56 to 21 loss. The Tigers played hard the whole game and never quit. The offense moved the ball well at times ending the game with 367 yards of total offense, but had trouble with penalties. Cadet Isaiah Guzman lead the team on the ground with 147 yards and two touchdowns. Guzman had one scoring run of 68 yards. Cadet Jason Fields started at quarterback and was 13 for 19 with a 121 yards passing and one touchdown. Cadet Myles Regan had six catches for 77 yards, with one of those catches covering 36 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively the Tigers improved throughout the game, and were lead by Cadet Braden Barnett with eight tackles and Cadet Stephen Chain with five tackles on the night. Cadet Dennis Britton handled the kicking duties for the night. He was 1 for 2 on extra points.

20130904-SoccerOn Saturday, August 31, 2013, the Hargrave varsity soccer team opened their season with a home game against the Blue Ridge School. On a warm 90 degree afternoon day, the Hargrave team was greeted with a multitude of fans that came arrived to support them.

Blue Ridge School came out early and surprised the Tigers' brand new flat defense with an overloaded attack to the ball side. Due to disorganization and 1v1 stabbing, these mistakes resulted in two quick goals by Blue Ridge.

Hargrave kept their heads up and controlled the midfield, keeping possession and persevering through being down two goals. The halftime whistle blew and they came out more organized and really dictated the pace and possession of the remainder of the game. In the 32nd minute of the second half, Cadet Tyler Fallen, a senior and team captain, ripped an upper-ninety scorcher to really give the Tigers an edge throughout the remainder of the game, however time was not on Hargrave's side as the Blue Ridge Barons held on for a hard-fought defeat of the Tigers, 1-2.

Outstanding performers include: Fallen who's finish places him as a force to be reckoned with in the center middie spot moving forward; Junior goalkeeper Cadet Henry Averett really performed well with 18 saves on the game, 13 in the first half; Finally, Cadet Luke DeWitt proved his place in the back four controlling the middle of the defense as a freshman leader.
