Home Starts on the Rise

Journal of Business photo

The Spokane-area new-home market looks to be strong for the foreseeable future, some prominent homebuilders here say.

In the first four months 2016, Spokane County and the cities of Spokane Valley issued a total 389 building permits for single-family homes, up 31 percent compared with the year-earlier period, continuing a four-year-trend in significant home-start gains.

The existing home market also has continued to gain strength.

The Spokane Association of Realtors reports that 1,772 homes were sold through its Multiple Listing Service in the first four months of the year, up 3 percent from the year-earlier period.

The median home price through the MLS was $185,000, an increase of 9.5 percent compared with the year-earlier period.

Special Report

The National Association of REALTORS' Board of Directors at its May 14 meeting in Washington voted to add several requirements to the Organizational Alignment/Core Standards for REALTOR associations and adopted a policy that seeks to ease student debt burdens that threaten to make it harder for people to become home buyers.

The board kept NAR dues at $120 for 2017, approved a three-year extension of the $35 special assessment that funds the consumer advertising campaign, and approved creation of a uniform communications platform for NAR's committees, advisory boards, and forums.

Drone Rules Coming Soon

Federal officials intend to publish long-awaited rules that will enable the general public to use small, unmanned aircraft for commercial activities before the end of spring.

That's the word from a group of real estate professionals who visited the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Washington, last week, during the REALTORS Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo.
