REALTOR Safety
|
The National Association of REALTORS, along with Carl Carter, Jr. - surviving son of REALTOR Beverly Carter, who was kidnapped and murdered while showing a vacant house - encourage REALTORS and Brokers to create a Safety Program in your office.
Carter also provides six takeaways and life lessons he learned from this tragedy.
An Arkansas woman who was charged, along with her estranged husband, in the abduction and slaying of real estate agent Beverly Carter (pictured at left) was sentenced, this week, to 30 years in prison after changing her plea to guilty. Crystal Lowery was charged with the kidnapping and first-degree murder of the Arkansas real estate agent and is expected to testify against her estranged husband Arron Lewis at his murder trial in January. Beverly Carter's death gripped national headlines at the end of September after she was reported missing following a showing to prospective buyers of a vacant, foreclosed home in Scott, Arkansas. After a massive search, her body was found four days later, about 20 miles away, in a shallow grave at a cement company. Discrimination Decision
|
The Supreme Court of the United States recently handed down an important housing decision that looks at whether a public or private entity can get hit with a federal Fair Housing lawsuit even if it had no intent to discriminate.
In its decision, the Supreme Court affirmed a circuit court's judgement, holding that disparate impact claims are cognizable under the Fair Housing Act, and are an important component to the Fair Housing Act's role in moving the country toward a more integrated society.

Local Call for Action
|
Your SAR and the Spokane Homebuilders Association, this week, dispatched a Call for Action for all members of both organizations to email Spokane Mayor David Condon and urge him to file a pre-election challenge to the latest Envision Spokane initiative. See the complete Call for Action that went out to SAR members on Wednesday of this week, online here. Under the Spokane Municipal Code, the Mayor has the authority to file a pre-election challenge asking the courts to verify the legality of the measure. This is what we're asking him to do. With provisions mandating wages up to $23 per hour, disallowing higher wages to experienced workers, and restricting the right of employers to let poor performing employees go, this initiative only adds to recent impending measures (such as Mandatory Sick Leave) being levied against business by the City of Spokane. Our local community simply cannot afford it. PLEASE TAKE TWO MINUTES & ASK HIM TO CHALLENGE THIS BALLOT MEASURE!

JUNE ANSWER
The Hearing Panel concluded that REALTOR B had adequately respected the agency of REALTOR A as interpreted by Standard of Practice 16-4. The panel's decision indicated that a listing broker should recognize that his refusal to disclose the type and expiration date of a listing to an inquiring broker frees the inquiring broker to contact the seller directly. If the contact with the seller is made under the provisions of Standard of Practice 16-4, the REALTOR is also able to discuss the terms of a future listing on the property or may enter into a listing to become effective upon the expiration of the current listing. The panel found REALTOR B not in violation of Article 16.
