Two Real Estate Agents Held at Gunpoint

Two real estate agents were robbed at gunpoint in Florida, last week.

The agents, at different properties and working for different firms, both say they were showing a home to a man when he pulled out a gun and demanded money.  The incidents occurred about an hour apart.   Both agents escaped unharmed.

The first victim told reporters that the man had scheduled an appointment with her to see a home at 1 p.m., last Wednesday.  She prequalified the man over the phone instead of first meeting at her office - a mistake she now warns other agents not to make.

Read a longer version of this story online here.

Police say their suspect visited a WalMart store in the area shortly before the attempted robberies.  See the surveillance video of the man online here:

2015 Spokane REALTOR Open House Weekend event winner, Jeannette Kroft (pictured above, middle), claimed her winner's check this week - a $3,000 project credit from Sullivan Homes.

Kroft also claimed a $450 gift certificate from HouseMaster.

Todd Sullivan (pictured above, right), managing partner of Sullivan Homes presented Jeannette with her - really - big certificate.

Terry Jordahl (pictured above, left), Keller Williams, was the listing broker at the winning house, who receives $250 cash.

Wire Fraud Alert

NAR is receiving an upswing of reports of a particularly insidious wire scam.

It goes like this: a hacker breaks into a licensee's email account to obtain information about upcoming real estate transactions.

The hacker then monitors the account to determine the likely timing of a close, then sends an email to the buyer, posing either as the title company representative or as the licensee.

The fraudulent email contains new wiring instructions or routing information, and requests the buyer send transaction-related funds accordingly.

Unfortunately, some buyers have fallen for this scheme, and have lost money.

Read more about the problem and how you can keep ahead of prevention and damage control, online here.

Patent Troll Legislation Advances

Did you ever think clicking a drop-down menu on a website or pressing the scanner function on a copier without paying someone were illegal?

It is NAR's position that these technologies are not protected by patents and an overwhelming majority of national legislators agree.

Last week, a U.S.
Senate committee approved S. 1137 - the PATENT Act - by a vote of 16-4.  This legislation is a carefully balanced set of patent litigation reforms that curb abusive patent litigation in the hands of so-called "patent trolls."

MAY ANSWER

The Hearing Panel concluded that REALTOR® B was in violation of Article 1; that he had been unfaithful in his obligations in not advising his client of his conclusion that the property was overpriced, based on the response to his initial sales efforts; and in withholding his best efforts to bring about a sale of the property in the interests of his client.

From case #1-5: Promotion of Client's Interests.
