 | | Brian Sabo & Reisa Bonetti-Sullivan |
Friends and Members,
Today I have returned from the American Eventing Championships in Texas, where I was working with the proud owner of EventingTrainingOnline.com, Brian Sabo. Currently wearing two hats, Brian is still finishing up his tenure as President, United States Eventing Association and beginning his new venture, where he is bringing the most awesome educational tool ever to Eventing world!
Two hats is a position many of us riders find ourselves in often. We want to move our horse through the levels yet sometimes we want to hold onto the excuse that they are still a "young horse". I know I am personally in that position currently.
Today's videos are great, as the perspective from the judges and trainers touch on this concept while giving essential tips and training for:
- Improving the flying changes
- Improving the canter pirouettes
- Improving the half pass
- Improving the hind end engagement
For those who are not yet members of DressageTrainingOnline.com, what are you waiting for?
- Nowhere else can you view training sessions broken into 15 minute segments, with text explaining exactly what is within that segment, so you can determine if you want to view that portion of the video.
- Nowhere else can you save your favorites for quick retrieval and review
- Nowhere else can you watch the Judge's View, where judges go back through a test they have judged, giving you the per movement scores and in depth explanation as to why they gave it that score.
- Nowhere else can members list their horses for sale for FREE!
- Nowhere else can you find such an international selection of respected trainers and judges to learn from, USA, GER, UK, NED, DEN, SWE, FRA, AUT, PORT, ESP, ISR, AUS, NZ, CAN
Hunker down and enjoy these videos while learning at the same time!

The Trainers' and Judges' Forum at Red Hawk Ranch now brings us Dr. Dieter Schule, Gerhard Politz, and Axel Steiner conducting a session with a horse and rider that will be riding the Developing Horse Prix St. Georges test the next day. This session overflows with essential information on improving your changes, canter pirouettes, and trot half passes.
with Dr. Dieter Schule, GERwith Axel Steiner, USA

Part 1: As this wonderful pair warms up, Dr. Schule asks the rider to stretch down with a lower neck while engaging the hind end. They talk about shortening the reins to make the horse rounder without restricting the horse. They ask for collection in the canter as well as counterflexion.
Part 2: Continuing in the canter, they do a single change on the long diagonal, and he bulged through the right shoulder on the diagonal. After discussing the importance of the outside rein and leg in circles and turns, they go on to do the single changes on the centerline in a figure 8. They then do the changes in a three loop serpentine, and talk about how many strides a horse in collection should take across the short side of the arena.
Part 3: The rider is now challenged to do the correct number of strides across the short end, and then they go to the change on center line when cros sing the arena. The canter pirouettes are next, with an emphasis on preparing for them, taking weight on the hindquarters, and controlling the pirouette. Part 4: Dr. Schule describes how the tests in Germany now include quarter pirouettes. Axel Steiner offers an exercise to use before going to the pirouette. In the trot they go to the shoulder in with a circle at E and B before doing the half pass. Part 5: They show the half pass to the other side, and Dr. Schule and Mr. Politz offer great pointers on the position of the rider and how it affects the movement. They discuss their plans for the next day, and talk about how difficult the five loop counter canter serpentine is that is required in the Developing Horse Prix St. Georges test. They then offer tips for schooling the walk at home with relaxation in the top line and stretch. Mr. Politz answers a question about what aids to use in the pirouette. We are again fortunate to watch a session of the Judges' and Trainers' Forum with Dr. Dieter Schule, Gerhard Politz and Axel Steiner including essential information on engaging the hindquarters, tempi changes and the trot half pass. Watch for great tips whether you are a rider, judge or trainer.
|

Part 1: Dr. Schule recommends that this lovely horse engage his hindquarters more, and suggests working on curved lines- circles and turns - to aid this. When they go straight ahead, it's on the second track to check for straightness. With this obedient horse he emphasizes the need for more engagement. Mr. Politz reiterates the importance of the circle, and warming up with a lower neck. He also talks about the walk and how to make it looser in the back.
Part 2: Axel Steiner clarifies that the walk should be through the body, and that in general she needs to be quicker behind. Dr. Schule has the rider tap with the whip to activate the inside hind while making sure to give with the hands. They watch her do her four tempis, and then work with her to raise the poll and use the hind legs better. Part 3: They move on to the threes by first preparing the canter, and then discuss the necessity of riding the changes forward without ending up running. The rider now shows her trot work, and Dr. Schule recommends only doing the shoulder in for part of the long side so they don't lose the tempo. To the right it is much better than to the left, so they have her do it again, using more inside leg rather than inside hand. He asks that they do a lengthened trot with the seat and legs without leaning back. Part 4: Dr. Schule, Mr. Politz and Mr. Steiner all offer great insights into riding the medium and extended trot with many tips on being successful in this movement. They return to the trot and half pass, and Dr. Schule has her ride shoulder in on the centerline to half pass with more fluency. He asks for the hindquarters to be more parallel to the long side. Part 5: Dr. Schule has the rider work on the half pass in the walk on quite a steep angle asking for more crossing over with the hind leg before returning to the trot half pass. Mr. Politz offers a different solution for creating more crossover, and they ride a volte in the corner to the quarterline, volte, half pass, and so on across the diagonal. Part 6: They continue with the volte to half pass exercise, and then Dr. Schule and Mr. Steiner give their summaries of the half pass work. They then take questions from the auditors including what gait to use to increase suppleness, and the use of travers and renvers. Click for Free Preview or Full Video.
