Jody Hartstone continues her series on the training of the off the track Thoroughbred with an excellent primer on teaching the walk to a very green young mare. This informative video is an essential lesson in the very first steps to take with these babies to start them on their new careers in dressage.
with Jody Hartstone, NZ

Part 1: Jody brings us a four year old mare just off the track, and explains how to deal with behaviors common with ex racehorses. When asked to stand, she is fidgety, and sometimes backs a step when asked to halt. She begins with the very basic step of asking her to stop and face forward. She points out the steps that are necessary with these talented horse at the very beginning of their training .
Part 2: Jody demonstrates how to teach a horse to turn if halting and standing still is too difficult, and explains why she teaches this as a rein aid rather than a leg aid at this point in the training. They next work on lengthening the walk steps, and how that helps the horse relax.
Part 3: As the horse stretches more, Jody is able to use positive reinforcement, and her steps become longer. Jody discusses the flight response and tension and the physiological reasons for training by riding rather than using the longe line. The next exercise is to take short steps, and then they alternate between long and short steps.

Dr. Ulf Moller continues this clinic with a beautiful six year old mare that is working through issues of leaning on the bit. He brings his expertise to solving this balance problem with exercises that confirm the half halt and increase the swing in the trot.
with Dr. Ulf Moller, GER
|
Part 1: Dr. Moller teaches this lesson on a six year old by beginning with an emphasis on being straight, and starting the turn with the bend, and finish with guiding with the legs of the rider. He asks for more bend on a circle until the inside rein gets light without holding too much on the outside rein. They add the sitting trot, and then work on walk trot transitions when she leans on the bit.
Part 2: They now ride half halts and go forward to help the horse come together and lighten on the reins. This allows the swing to happen. In the canter he asks that the rider ride up and light and through the neck.
Part 3: As they continue at the trot, they keep asking her to carry more weight on the hindquarters. Dr. Moller encourages the rider to bend her neck left and right instead of holding it in position. They make the half halts quicker and lighter when the balance makes her run into the bridle. He has her repeat the bending exercise in the canter. As this improves, they change directions but continue in the counter canter, asking for bend in both directions before asking for the flying change.
Part 4: Dr. Moller keeps them moving forward in the trot after the canter until the mare gets light. They ride through some tension, again using the bend in each direction while trotting the circle. They are rewarded with a beautiful, forward trot.
Part 5: They reverse direction in the canter with no flying change and go to the counter canter. After a trot transition they play with the bend left and right without letting her lean on the bit.
