Part 1: Catherine Haddad presents a Master Class on Communication With the Horse sponsored by the Potomac Valley Dressage Association. She has brought a 4,5, and 8 year old and rides Winyamaro, her Grand Prix horse, as demo horses for the clinic. The session begins by Catherine explaining her philosophy of training, and they start the ridden demonstration with a four year old mare. The first thing she looks for is for the horse to go forward, and then to to step towards the bridle with her hind legs rather than worry about the perfect frame. Rhythm is the next concern.
Part 2: Catherine explains that the horse is the one who teaches us how to ride. She has the rider ride a three loop serpentine using his body, weight, and skeleton to turn the horse rather than the bit. She discusses her concept of submission, and the importance of sitting the trot.
Part 3: We have a great opportunity to see proper stretching as well as being able to come back into a higher frame. The five year old warms up in a slightly higher frame, and during the work the frame will come up. She talks about her preference for a the horse to be above the bit and open rather than behind the bit. Catherine tells a great story of the universality of communication with a horse. Part 4: This horse and rider show the beginnings of collection on a loose, elastic horse without riding the horse backwards. They next talk about and demonstrate the walk. The half steps are introduced on a large circle, pushing the rear end out. They demonstrate a very clear example of riding the horse with the elbows going towards the bit as opposed to putting the brakes on with your elbows going back. Part 5: This pair shows a beautiful stretchy circle, and demonstrates how to ride them back up. Catherine typically begins the flying change at this age, and she discusses how she trains them and the use of the double bridle. We get to see a great training session on single changes, including how to ride through some issues. Watch this for great tips on teaching the changes.
