Part 2:  Jody talks about training including cross tying and mounting from the ground. She makes great recommendations on tack, length of training sessions, and feeding schedules, as well as what to expect on their first outings.  She also covers conformation qualities to look for.

In this second installment of the series, Jody Hartstone

demonstrates essential groundwork for starting an off the track Thoroughbred.  Watch as she applies her training to two very different Thoroughbreds for tips on how to start your own horse.   

 

Part 1:  Jody brings us through the steps of groundwork beginning with habituating this mare to using a whip while on the ground to ask for moving forward and backwards. She demonstrates training to ask the horse to stand still.

 

Part 2:  Jody shows how to teach the horse to remain still and talks about the benefits of this training.  She also works with teaching the mare to lower her head while standing.  Jody demonstrates these principles with a second, more sensitive horse.
