Friends and Members,

We all know correct contact is essential in
riding and required to move through the levels appropriately. In that same vein,
ma
ny of you may think you are not at the place in your riding to introduce the concept of some of the upper level movements.

However, some of the movements, like piaffe or passage will actually help improve the basics.

Therefore, today we are releasing our first video focused on improving the contact in a more advanced PSG horse and a second video about learning and incorporating piaffe and passage into a greener horse. No matter what their age or experience level, horse or rider, these are all tools to help you better the basics and move up the levels.

Colonel Christian Carde discusses the foundation of lightness, contact and stretch in this essential video.  We have the exceptional privilege of watching him ride and demonstrate these fundamentals, and then instruct a PSG rider and horse on improving their frame through improving these basics.

with Colonel Christian Carde

Christian Carde

Part 1:  Colonel Christian Carde rides this PSG gelding, telling us how at first he feels the horse against the rein, and how he rides the contact and asks for stretch.  All these must be done with activity, the stretching begins from the engagement of the hind legs, and that this all be done from the snaffle.  When this is accoplished in the walk, they repeat the exercises in the trot.

Part 2:  The rider remounts, and Colonel Carde talks about how the horse must learn to   obey the hand and not resist by going up.  He gives a wonderful explanation of how to accomplish this, and how important it is to refrain from pulling.  He also explains what true lightness is.  The horse and rider show a great example of the trot with lightness.  They show the half pass and shoulder in, and the Colonel encourages him to let the horse stretch as a reward.

Part 3:  They start with at walk pirouette, and the Colonel helps him with his hand position. In the canter he asks for self carriage, and then stretch with activity.  They show a medium trot with lightness to end the session.

Alfredo Hernandez, master of the piaffe and passage, brings us a very interesting session with an extremely talented but resistant mare.  This is a must see for a wonderful demonstration on the power of patience and persistence and insistence on keeping the contact to produce correct P and P.

With Alfredo Hernandez

Alfredo

Part 1:  In this session Alfredo Hernandez begins by asking the rider to show him where they currently are with the piaffe and passage.  As her trainer helps her, Alfredo explains that the horse must be through to the bit while training the piaffe.  When the horse is introduced to the piaffe with the whip, she shows resistance and backs, but Alfredo asks that the rider keep the contact.

Part 2:  They continue with their patient and persistent work with more of a passage movement.  Alfredo gives a great explanation of why it is so important to keep the contact.

Part 3:  The mare is still resistant resulting in more backing, but as she faces Alredo, she comes with more relaxation. They do not force her, but react with patience. AS soon as she offers several steps of passage, they end the session.
