Dani Dockx coaches 2010 WEG USA Para Dressage team member, Susan Treabess. Watch them work towards a more powerful step and the quickness necessary to perform successful flying changes.
with Dani Dockx, ESP
|
Part 1: Dani Dockx works with this beautiful horse and Susan Treabess 2010 WEG USA Para Dressage team member. (Watch the interview with Michel Assouline for an explanation of the different levels of para riders and their horses.) As they warm up, Dani asks that their canter trot transitions be forward and not too short. Dani then explains the strategy for working on canter walk canter transitions.
Part 2: They continue with canter trot canter transitions, then transitions within the canter before asking for the first canter walk transitions. Dani asks for precision in the walk before doing an up transition. When they work the shoulder in, he asks for more outside rein and inside leg while remaining forward.
Part 3: The trot half pass is next, and after several great examples they go to the extended trot. For the counter canter he asks for more power from behind. Part 4: To keep the power in the canter, Dani has them do half halts in the canter rather than asking him to go more forward. They then use this exercise in the counter canter to keep him quick behind, and progress to asking for this on a circle. Dani describes how important it is to have this quickness behind when progressing to the flying changes. Part 5: With the emphasis on the jump from behind they continue to do single changes on the long diagonal. Dani then assists them from the ground with the piaffe.

Learn from this intriguing video the intricacies of introducing the piaffe with assistance from the ground. We get a rare chance to see Alfredo Hernandez teach a trainer how to use the bamboo pole, and see a young, effective rider change the balance of her horse to prepare him for this work.
with Alfredo Hernandez, USA
|
Part 1: As we join Alfredo Hernandez in this lesson, we get to see an immediate improvement on a horse who is irregular in the trot. He helps her change the balance of the horse and corrects her head movement as she sits the trot. Watch for a great example of someone effectively helping their horse to move better. This segment ends with Alfredo explaining to a trainer how to assist from the ground with the bamboo pole. Part 2: They continue the work in the trot, and it is very interesting to see how this young rider can push her horse forward enough into the bridle to visibly change her horse. The trainer now works with the student using the whip to teach him to raise his back legs with the supervision of Alfredo. Part 3: Alfredo explains some of the safety issues of assisting from the ground and then assists the rider in creating the half steps. He then demonstrates to the trainer how to introduce the horse to the bamboo. Watch to see a horse showing some resistance to this procedure, but calmly learning how to accept this training. Part 4: The rider is encourage to ride every step as Alfredo assists from the ground, now actually using the bamboo. They end the session with successful steps.
