Catherine Haddad joins us for a clear and informative lesson on the sitting trot and the relationship of the rider position and the regularity of the gaits of the horse. Great tips are given for improving your sitting trot, and for the position and use of the leg.
with Catherine Haddad, USA
|
Part 1: Catherine works with a young rider currently showing at first level. They continue from the previous day's lesson, working on a consistent contact helping him to have a more regular step. He is showing more bounce and elasticity in his gaits as they warm up. When she rides with the bit balanced in the mouth, he shows regularity.
Part 2: Catherine explains how they have worked on having her horse respond properly to her leg, and how kicking is not used to get him in front of the leg. As he backs off and his neck gets short, Catherine has her send him forward. Before working the counter canter, Catherine asks for him to have more impulsion and give a bit with her hands.
Part 3: No stirrups! Catherine has her let her leg drop down and hang, and shows us how she has the leg positioned. We get to see a sitting trot lesson without stirrups, with Catherine encouraging her to follow with her hip joints. She emphasizes that the rider needs to continue with this work for another couple of weeks before worrying about her leg. Part 4: There is a clear example of the importance of the seat and hand in having your horse travel with regularity.

What a pleasure to watch Christoph Hess teach this accomplished rider and her beautiful four year old mare under saddle for only nine months. Join them for a master class in training the half steps fro improved transitions and proper trot.
with Christoph Hess, GER
|
Part 1: They begin with riding the serpentine, more as an S figure to increase the strength in the inside hind leg. If the mare moves off the bit in the figure, Mr. Hess has her ride a circle during the serpentine. He asks that she stretch down enabling her hind legs to move more. They try for this without over using the inside rein. He has her make sure that the down transitions are accurate. This talented rider shows a great example of asking for a walk trot transition with push from behind. They talk about the reins in the free walk.
Part 2: They work the canter using the whole arena in a light seat, asking her to jump from behind under the center of gravity. The rider plays with her seat, maintaining the jump, and shows a lovely trot when changing directions. Going to the left he asks for more inside leg when the mare is a bit behind the leg. (Some German is included!) Mr. Hess has her walk and do the leg yield on the circle from the left leg to get her a bit lighter.
Part 3: On a small circle they begin asking for the half steps. They show some wonderful walk trot trot walk transitions in the process. They talk about where to use the whip to aid in keeping her in front of the leg.
Part 4: In the sitting trot they work the half steps to the right, and he makes sure that the mare is round and in front of the leg when they ask for this. They show a wonderful example of proper flexion.
