The videos today have absolutely nothing in common. Except they are both riding paint crosses. The first video featuring Jose Mendez is PERFECT for a novice, beginner, training level rider. Jose has the rider do certain exercises and then relates it to dressage terminology, such as, "now what your feeling is called suspension". Wonderful learning because many are too afraid to ask what certain words really mean.
The next video is Axel Steiner, FEI O Judge, who works with a student at 4th/S/Advanced level. This is a good demonstration of the horse at the beginning of the ride versus how it looks at the end of the ride. You as a viewer will see the obvious difference. Axel, acts more as eyes on the ground, confirming when it's right and letting the rider know she is NOT getting what she want's when she may be thinking she is. This is an interesting video as the use of pirouettes is brought into the schooling a few different times, in very different places, to help achieve a change in balance and to gain more push from the hind end.

Axel Steiner brings us s clear lesson on the requirements for a fourth level horse, as well as great tips and exercises on training for the canter pirouette.
with Axel Steiner, USA
|
Part 1: Axel watches a paint cross gelding warm up, and sees that he has three good gaits and a good attitude towards work. They need more athleticism for the fourth level work, and use the transitions and shoulder in to help him get lighter in the front. They ride the shoulder in at the canter, and move on to the half pass.
Part 2: They use the schooling pirouette to engage the horse, and then ask for the single change on the short diagonal. After some changes on the long diagonals, they take a break and then return to the trot using the half steps to improve his lightness. The half pass is correct but could use more flow. Axel suggests riding him a bit under tempo in the extended trot. They show a great down transition from the extended trot.
Part 3: Axel talks about riding exercises correctly and with fewer repetitions. They then work on the half pass to flying change, and Axel has the rider ask for a bit more so the horse learns he can do it with more flow and lightness. Axel assists from the ground with the working pirouette, helping him to lower his croup and sit.
Part 4: They work the canter pirouette in the other direction, and then the extended trot. He shows lovely self carriage and suspension.

Jose Mendez provides a wonderful, positive lesson covering the basics of training level. Watch this video to see how the basics can improve the foundation of training.
with Jose Mendez, AUS
|
Part 1: Jose Mendez works with this Training level pair by beginning with a six meter circle at the walk. He explains the aids for the shoulder fore. When asking for the halt, Jose helps the rider attain a square halt.
Part 2: They continue at the trot, and Jose provides many good tips on being forward, the use of the whip and contact. He describes the leg position and length of stirrup the rider should aim for.
Part 3: Jose reviews how to improve the quality of the trot. By asking for the canter on a circle, they have the bend and a more supple back for the depart.
Part 4: Jose gives an excellent description of the aids used to ask the horse to go more forward, and how they interact. As they canter, Jose helps the rider keep straight. The work they have done together has created a trot that tracks up with more cadence and suspension.
Part 5: They continue with the canter and do a shoulder fore with flexion to the inside on the quarter line, getting better bend and bounce in the canter. Jose reviews with them the improvements since the last clinic. They discuss what the movements are for the beginning of collection.
Part 6: They now work on a three loop serpentine in a nice trot and then work on transitions within the trot. Jose gives her great advice about riding corners and the trot continues to improve. With this lovely trot, they ask for a forward and correct down transition.
