from Reisa Bonetti-Sullivan

Friends, it is a tough job, but somebody's got to do it! CDI Vidauban was a lovely outing that was made primarily to work with my devidaubanlogoar friend and long time DTO trainer, Jan Bemelmans, now coaching the French team after 15 years leading the Spanish team to their highest levels of success thus far!

Vidauban
We captured a great deal of fabulous training footage, met lots of new friends and enjoyed all the French had to offer. Stay tuned for new and wonderfully educational footage from Jan as he begins another journey on new soil.

Our new release videos today, are both focused at Fourth Level/S/Advanced however my personal take aways are two different key points:
  • Axel Steiner focuses on the subtle difference of collection and frame from 3rd to 4th level and works with the rider on achieving this, they do a test run at Fourth Level Test 2 and proceed to school a few key areas afterward. Super valuable for anyone preparing for Fourth level competition.
  • Christoff Hess emphasizes the importance of quick and snappy transitions, repeatedly mentioning that in the downward you dont think of ending one gait and beginning another, meaning stop trotting and start walking, you think of trotting into the walk with activity and correct rhythm. Another subtle but important difference.

Watch this essential video with Christoph Hess for great tips on improving your canter half pass for Fourth One and see the benefits it reaps in the flying change. Mr. Hess then coaches the rider as she performs Fourth Level Test One.

 with Christoph Hess, GER

Christoph Hess

Part 1:  Christoph Hess begins this session this upper level gelding asking for precision in the walk and trot transitions while keeping the swing. The work on the walk pirouette and the walk canter transitions next.

Part 2:  Mr. Hess helps this accomplished rider with a slight change to her position, and they work on the working spiraling in the canter with the reins in one hand.  After repeating the exercise in the other direction, they ask for the canter to lengthen with self carriage.

Part 3:  Continuing with the medium canter, they then move on to the trot without it being passagey.  Mr. Hess stresses asking for inside flexion from the inside leg.  They show a good walk and then move on to very good flying changes.  Mr. Hess advises that the horse be a bit more energetic in the canter for the test, and gives advice for riding the canter half pass.

Part 4:  As they canter, Mr. Hess asks for more stretch and more quality in the canter with a clear three beat rhythm.  As they perform the half pass, Mr. Hess asks for shoulder in, and they go on to school the shoulder in to half pass to shoulder in.

Part 5:  Mr. Hess works from the ground to achieve the shape and flexion that they are looking for. They do the shoulder in to half pass to shoulder in exercise in the other direction.

Part 6:  Watch the Fourth Level Test One being ridden with coaching from Mr. Hess.
