Don't forget the FORWARD for the rebalancing!
|
|
|
from Reisa Bonetti-Sullivan
|
Forward! This was a predominant theme and key take away from both videos we release today. Though one is a training level session with a 4 year old and the other is with a more seasoned 4th/S level horse, the theme stayed the same.
Forward using the leg is essential for getting the desired effect of bringing the withers and the neck up for rebalancing, to correct the frame, remove the tension or simply to get your horse in front of the leg.
As you watch these videos, keep that essential point in mind and how these trainers ask the students to use this aid to correct so many things.

What an excellent opportunity to watch Alizee Froment work with a young rider and a young horse! Watch this video for great examples of how to work your young, enthusiastic baby and help him learn to achieve his balance and flexion.
with Alizee Froment, FRA
|
Part 1: In this training session, Alizee asks Audre on her four year old to begin at the walk and work on flexion, always working with a giving hand and the inside leg. They use the leg yield to encourage him to work when he jigs a bit at the walk. In the shoulder in they search for a flowing walk with flexion.
Part 2: They continue in the walk with the leg yield, emphasizing the use of the right leg aid. They start the trot with a ten meter serpentine with ten meter circles on each loop, using the ten meter circle to control the shoulder and his playing. In the trot leg yields, Alizee asks for more activity as he closes his neck, but always with an advancing hand.
Part 3: Alizee has the rider continue with the leg yield before they move on to trot lengthenings on the short diagonal. They start the trot canter trot transitions with a relaxed frame. asking for the canter depart on a small circle as they hit the rail. When he plays, they use a smaller circle. Alizee asks the rider to control the outside shoulder, and as they return to the trot, she continues with the inside flexion and balance.
Part 4: The depart this time is even better, and Alizee provides great instruction on maintaining his balance while keeping the flexion and energy. The canter work improves the trot, and they continue to practice the trot canter trot transitions. They allow him to stretch in the walk, but make sure to ask him to march in the walk and keep his activity. The walk shows much improvement from the beginning.
Part 5: When returning to the canter, they ask for a lengthening. He becomes closed in his neck line, and Alizee helps the rider pick him up. There is another good stretchy trot followed by a great explanation of how to pick the horse up and rebalance him. She then gives the rider a great exercise to control his shoulders- the single loop serpentine to the quarter line.
Part 6: After this work, they return to the stretchy walk, asking him to stretch his nose out and away from his body. When he shows some tension in anticipation of the canter depart, they wait for him to relax. They do the single loop serpentine on the other lead, and then do the trot serpentine with circles.

Axel Steiner brings us a wonderful working session with a talented pair schooling their Fourth Level Test Two. Included are essential tips on movements that will improve your scores and great instruction on how to keep the horse in front of the vertical.
with Axel Steiner, USA
|
Part 1: Mr. Steiner begins with an eight year old mare, and they school the movements necessary to ride the 4-2 test. He discusses the importance of the body position of the rider to have an effective seat. When the mare is too low in the neck, they use the half pass to raise her front end. Axel covers the strategies for warming up before entering the arena to compete. They talk about keeping her in front of the vertical and open in the neck, and why that is so important with this horse.
Part 2: The position and neck are great in the trot half pass, but Mr. Steiner asks for more energy in the trot. The work has brought better connection and carriage. as shown in the shoulder ins and medium trots. They also school the walk pirouettes, and allow her to stretch when she shows tension. Mr. Steiner offers great advice on riding the extended walk.
Part 3: This excellent pair now rides the 4-2 test with coaching from Mr. Steiner.
Part 4: Mr. Steiner works with this pair on the canter pirouettes, emphasizing the seat aids.
