Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz, member of the 2012 Spanish Olympic Dressage team, works with a stunning Palomino PRE stallion. Throughout the session we watch the importance of relaxation and stretching into the bit, and then have the unique opportunity to see Juan ride and work the upper level movements.
with Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz, ESP

Part 1: As this beautiful horse and rider warm up, Juan asks for them to slow the rhythm of the trot with the neck lower. To the left they need more bending at the trot. After adjusting the noseband, they continue in the canter right, and he becomes softer and reaches down.To improve a hurried trot they work on the inside leg to outside rein, and it continues to improve.
Part 2: Continuing in the trot, they alternate the bend to the inside and then the outside of the circle, followed by giving the rein. The horse uses his back more, relaxes, and reaches forward. In the canter they use the same exercise to ask for relaxation. During a walk break, Juan asks for more relaxation in the back and for the rider to sit heavier in the saddle.
Part 3: In the canter they work on going forward and back with a light contact using the leg and seat for collection. Juan reviews what their next steps should be, and offers to school the horse himself. We are provided with an excellent opportunity to watch a master encourage relaxation and reach into the bridle.
Part 4: Juan continues at the trot, and adds half pass at the canter. This lovely horse shows his talent for collection and medium trots. They then school the canter pirouette. Juan ends by discussing how the horse needs to stretch.

Watch this wonderful video with Dr. Ulf Moller for excellent tips and hints on using the aids effectively to train your young horse. This is a must see for those working on the foundation of training for a four year old.
with Dr. Ulf Moller, GER
|
Part 1: Dr. Moller asks this rider to use the corners with this four year old horse and explains what he means by feeling the mouth. They go over the use of the sitting trot in the transition from rising trot to walk. The coordination of rein and leg riding corners is discussed.
Part 2: They work to make the transitions look effortless with the neck up and growing through the transition. Dr. Moller gives a good explanation of the training process for starting to teach new things to the horse, and how the aids may need to be used to teach the movement as opposed to how they are used once they know what the rider wants. There are excellent examples of training the walk trot walk and walk trot halt transitions.
Part 3: They continue with the trot halt transitions, and then advance to trot half halt trot transitions. Dr. Moller describes how to ride this and when this half halt should be used. As they canter on the circle, he provides excellent advice on how to ride the bend and how to raise the neck from behind rather than with the reins.
Part 4: Dr. Moller asks for bend on the circle to transition from trot to canter, holding the bend during the transition. They move a little more forward without him getting longer, but also have to keep the jump when he shortens his stride. Dr. Moller reiterates how important it is to work the half halt even at this stage to lead to quicker an dmore precise ones later in training. When they run into issues, the Dr. asks for him to keep the horse in front of his leg.
Part 5: As they ride the corner the Dr. asks for shoulder in through the corner. They cross the diagonal and ride the counter canter. They use the half halts to achieve more self carriage and keep him from leaning on the bit.

This is one of my favorite events covered by DressageTrainingOnline.com. It showed the rider riding a test with Gary Rockwell giving scores and then Lilo Fore, works on the developmental areas with the horse and rider pair, with Gary's additional input. The format was helpful because you could immediately equate what you saw in a test with how to work on fixing it. It is Training Level through Grand Prix, so the education applies to all riders at all levels.
Watching this symposium also is applicable to USDF University Credits.
