I just returned from a trip to Wellington, FL where I captured a ton of content from many of DTO's regularly featured trainers and a few new trainers that I am bringing on board. Some of you may notice...that is not me in the picture on the right. But it could have been.... if only she was sunburned and ecstatic. Being that I rarely film myself anymore, giving that honor to my many videographers around the world, I forgot that the sun begins to burn and the legs begin to burn-OUT after standing for many many hours at a time! It's all in the name of love. I love my job, I love being able to provide content the dressage community can benefit so greatly from and I love the people I work with! I'm so happy to have gotten out into the field again. Because this sport is my personal passion, my own riding trials and tribulations always arise as I watch a training session, and it allows me to capture content in a way that is more meaningful to my members. I'm not afraid to ask for clarification of a concept which helps everybody present at the time and watching online. I don't bring trainers on board based on a name, I choose respected trainers who are excellent teachers....that is who I get excited to work with. 2013 is shaping up to be a wonderful year and we are very excited to share it with you.

In Part Two of this series, this lovely young mare, bred by Catherine Haddad, gives us the opportunity to see how a 3 year old just starting her training is worked in the Haddad system of training. There are wonderful examples of how to work through shying and encouraging a young horse to stretch towards the contact and bit.

Part 1: Catherine begins by explaining the importance of our training in keeping horses sound into their old age. Maximus, her Grand Prix mount, was featured in the previous video as a schoolmaster for a beginner rider. This next horse is a three year old mare to demonstrate the beginnings of training. She discusses her philosophy of dealing with shying.
Part 2: This mares gives the opportunity to demonstrate the method Catherine uses to teach the horse to accept the bit. There is a great instruction on encouraging the horse to follow the bit forward and down. In the serpentine, they show how they use their weight and where they are looking to direct the horse.
Part 3: With distractions outside the arena, they again have the opportunity to show how to ride through these issues without pulling. Catherine then asks the audience to applaud, and shows how she trains the horse to walk towards what they are afraid of without restraint.

Part Three of this series with Catherine Haddad introduces a four year old and offers the opportunity to see a youngster ridden in the double bridle for the first time. This video provides excellent information on the correct way to use the aids in early training to aim towards a Grand Prix career.

Part 1: Part Three of this series begins with an excellent exercise to help the rider avoid using the reins to set the head. She then discusses the differences between training for the four, five and six year old classes and training to go to Grand Prix. The rider is on a four year old with exceptional abilities and the talent to go all the way. Catherine talks about the use of the leg aids and the concept of neutral aids.
Part 2: They work the trot halt trot transitions without using the reins to accomplish the halt and Catherine explains the importance of this skill in creating the half halt. She also describes how she uses the spurs, and they then show half pass, a single change and counter canter. She answers a question from the audience about the use of the whip.
Part 3: Catherine begins with an excellent description of using the parallel aids for a flying change and her methods of using the double bridle. She has the rider change to a double bridle and gives us the opportunity to see a horse ridden for the first time in a double. They use the whip to tap him and ask him to step with more expression, giving us the opportunity to see the beginnings of throughness. Catherine explains how his training will progress from this point.

This is one of my favorite events covered by DressageTrainingOnline.com. It showed the rider riding a test with Gary Rockwell giving scores and then Lilo Fore, works on the developmental areas with the horse and rider pair, with Gary's additional input. The format was helpful because you could immediately equate what you saw in a test with how to work on fixing it. It is Training Level through Grand Prix, so the education applies to all riders at all levels.
Watching this symposium also is applicable to USDF University Credits.
