...whether your aspirations are improvement of dressage basic  or you're striving for Olympic gold...
Have you been thinking about those 2013 riding goals? I have and I will be sharing them with you! (believe me, I know it's scary to actually make them public...what if I fail:( )

As mentioned in a previous email we have a special opportunity in store for you that we will announce this month! For now, be sure it will be a chance of a lifetime.

To give you a flavor of what we have given away in the past, let me take you back to 2010. DTO launched the YoungStar Spotlight, where we took submissions over a few months and voted in 6 trainers who specifically worked with the development of young dressage horses. DTO then hosted all 6 of them on an all expenses paid journey to Germany for 5 days, where we attended the Bundeschampionate and top training barns, again focused on young horse training,  with personal hosts and educators to include, Scott Hassler, USEF National Young Horse Coach, Dr. Ulf Moller, breeder and trainer of specialized young dressage horses, PSI, Ingo Pape, breeder and specialized trainer of young dressage horses, Peter Holler, German FEI Judge, Oliver Oelrich, German trainer and coach of the German National Young Rider team, and Michael Klimke, trainer.

To be prepared to take advantage of  our 2013 opportunity, do the following:
  1. Set a Primary and Secondary Equestrian Goal
  2. Have a .jpg picture of yourself and a paragraph or two discussing your goals prepared OR make a video of yourself discussing your goals, on or off your horse. We are a video centric site, so of course, video is better.
  3. Clear out the second week of January 2014 to avail yourself to a wonderful and exiting opportunity!

Have you been having troubles with your single changes?  Debbie McDonald brings us a clear lesson on the importance of having your horse through and straight to start their career in ever more challenging changes.

with Debbie McDonald, USA

DebbiewithHorse

Part 1:  This horse and rider begin with an energetic trot and work on the shoulder in and haunches in making sure the horse is off her inside leg.  They use the leg yield on a circle.  Debbie explains how concentrating on one problem can lead to other problems.

Part 2:  As they continue to work the shoulder in and haunches in, the contact improves when they keep the energy of the trot up.  In the canter Debbie asks to make sure that the horse is through and straight. She describes why this can affect the single changes.

Part 3:  Debbie gives an excellent, detailed explanation of how to get the single change straight, and provides exercises to do this.

Watch this video if you are struggling with a horse who is resistant to the contact for a great example of working through this frustrating problem.  Dr. Ulf Moller coaches this rider and talented young mare through the ups and downs of finding the elusive contact and creating a horse that is more through and elastic in the back.

  with Dr. Ulf Moller, GER

UlfBigger

Part 1:   This five year old mare shows resistance to the contact, and Dr. Moller  gives great instruction on the basics of feeling the mouth with both reins.  They begin by moving the horse forward first.  When she backs away from the contact, he instructs to drive her forward while carrying her hands and maintaining the contact.

Part 2:  As they move to the sitting trot, the mare slows down, so they work on preparing for the transition from rising to sitting trot. Dr. Moller stresses that the rider does not open her hands when the mare gets slow, and that she ride proactively instead of reactively.

Part 3:    As the mare continues to show resistance to going forward, Dr. Moller assists from the ground.  She shows greater resistance in the walk, and they continue to move forward while maintaining the contact.

Part 4:  They move on to the canter with resistance still shown, and continue to ask the horse to move forward with contact.  The trot after the canter shows improvement. They reverse and canter the other direction.

Part 5:  Dr. Moller encourages the rider to become quicker with her corrections, and continue on the same path of keeping the contact through the resistance.  Even as she is allowed to stretch, they still ask for contact on the reins.  Dr. Moller explains that once any possible soundness concerns are ruled out, they need to continue this process in their training.  He gives an explanation of the purpose of the noseband and flash and how they should fit.

This is a favorite and one I have watched many times over in addition to having recommended to others many hundreds of times. Expression, self carriage, lightness and expression (I know I already said that). Catherine shows you how to get that activity we strive for to make our horses really bring out their brilliance. This is also how you get that "fancier" trot, that extra activity how we turns those 7's into 8's!
