Debbie McDonald brings us a lesson in the importance of connection and accurate transitions with energy.  Great tips are offered on improving body position and the basics of riding in a double bridle.

DebbiewithHorse

Part 1:  While working on a consistent sized circle with the walk remaining the same, Debbie asks the rider to get the outside shoulder straighter, including using counter flexion.  She offers good tips on effective riding including body position and the use of good transitions.

Part 2:    They move to the canter, and Debbie offers advice for subtle body changes to improve the canter.  With the trot, they continue the work on the connection.  The mare becomes more forward and responsive.

Part 3:  Debbie asks for the shoulder in, and when the mare comes above the bit, she encourages the rider to ride more off the snaffle and to be patient and wait for the mare to accept the contact.  Discussion of contact and why the horse is so low in the poll.

Join Susanne von Dietze in this semi private lesson focusing on the fundamentals of how body awareness can influence the rhythm of the horse.  She provides essential tips on improving the sitting trot.

Susannevondietze

Part 1:  Ms. von Dietze observes the riders warm up and determines that both riders in this semi private lesson need to work on maintaining a rhythm . As they trot on a circle, the challenge is to have the same number of strides for every quarter of the circle. The rhythm becomes much better, and they repeat the exercise at the canter.

Part 2:  They reverse direction and repeat the same exercise in trot and canter.  Ms. von Dietze gives a terrific explanation of why accuracy on the circle can improve the rhythm. The next exercise aids the riders in finding their seatbones.

Part 3:  They now become aware of what happens to their seatbones as they use their leg aids, and do an exercise trying to keep the weight even in the seatbones while moving the legs and freeing the hips.  In the rising trot, they think about where their seatbones touch the saddle, and then move where they land. As they go to short spurts of sitting trot, they next concentrate on moving their hands to prevent locking their hands and arms.

Part 4:  Ms. von Dietze asks for walk to sitting trot  to walk transitions while thinking about how their bodies ask for the transitions.

Part 5:  In the rising trot, they allow the horses to stretch, and the previous work has lead to better moving horses with improved rhythm.

This is a favorite and one I have watched many times over in addition to having recommended to others many hundreds of times. Expression, self carriage, lightness and expression (I know I already said that). Catherine shows you how to get that activity we strive for to make our horses really bring out their brilliance. This is also how you get that "fancier" trot, that extra activity how we turns those 7's into 8's!
