Join Shannon Peters for essential tips on rider position and how that is the foundation for better collection and effective aids.  The use of counter flexion to create a more supple horse and an understanding of schooling the flying change on a young horse round out this excellent video.

Part 1:  This mare warms up beautifully, and Ms. Peters asks for the rider to be particular in her expectations.  They work through a mild spook in the corner by  making sure she is honest in the right rein.  In the canter, they check for flexion in both directions and the ability to move the shoulders.

Part 2:  They start with the haunches in while making sure the mare doesn't brace against the aids.  Ms. Peters gives a great explanation of the importance of the outside rein.  They do the half pass across the long diagonal with a couple of counter flexions, resulting in a better frame.  There are great tips on the rider position to create more effective riding.

Part 3: Ms. Peters continues with more instruction on how a strong position is essential for collection.  As they work the canter pirouettes, the mare drifts to the outside, and they work on correcting this.  In the trot they keep  the frame from pushing out too far behind.  To prepare for the changes, they talk about the importance of keeping the frame.

Part 4:  They continue to work on the changes with excellent instruction on how to create the correct foundation to enable good changes.  The canter pirouette right goes better, and Ms. Peters gives clear instructions on the aids for the rider.

What an excellent opportunity to watch a master horseman ride a talented upper level horse and work through some training problems in the canter pirouette!  He offers terrific training tips for changes, half steps and the pirouette.

Peter Gmoser Clapping

Part 1: Peter Gmoser brings us a 9 year old Trakhaener gelding that has competed in the small tour who has come back to him to work on the canter pirouettes.  He first looks for relaxation in the walk and trot while he explains the history with this horse and why he uses lunging before riding with some horses.

Part 2: As he moves to the canter work, he is careful to make sure he gets an immediate response to the aids, particularly because of his training for the pirouettes.  When the horse is not accepting the outside rein, he uses counter flexion.  In the canter he asks that the horse be forward first, and then goes on to the work to prepare for the pirouette.  He shows an excellent exercise for horse that may jump through with both hind legs in the pirouettes.

Part 3: Peter continues with the haunches in on a circle, asking the horse to collect and then go forward.  He explains the use of the whip in this movement.  The walk pirouette is used to improve the canter pirouette, and he demonstrates what to do when the horse leans on the inside leg.  He works through some stiffness issues in the changes.  As he rides the haunches in on a small circle, he asks for collection and then forward.

Part 4: When the horse allows him to change the bend in the canter without changing the canter and does single changes well, he moves on to the threes and twos.  Peter asks for half steps in the trot with rhythm and suppleness at this stage in his training rather than piaffe.

Part 5:  Peter demonstrates the walk, half step, trot transitions to keep the horse from anticipating the walk after the training half steps.  He rides and excellent demonstration of a relaxed, elastic, responsive horse who is happy in his work.

Part 6:  He returns to the flying changes, making the horse soft in both directions first.  In preparation for the ones, he works on the twos. The session ends with a lovely stretchy trot.

This is a favorite and one I have watched many times over in addition to having recommended to others many hundreds of times. Expression, self carriage, lightness and expression (I know I already said that). Catherine shows you how to get that activity we strive for to make our horses really bring out their brilliance. This is also how you get that "fancier" trot, that extra activity how we turns those 7's into 8's!
