Enjoy these 2 new reality training videos.  Featuring Mr. Hess working with a young horse, summarizing for the rider that the homework would be to open up the neck more. To most, you would look and see a lovely frame and poll position. However, as a young horse, it is critical, to be able to open up, not letting your horse overbend or duck behind the bit. If we don't focus on this we run into problems later in that they actually have a manufactured poll position and thus are hindered from moving over their back and really accessing that hind end. Many of us fall into the trap of letting our young horses keep the high poll and perfect frame at a young age since it's what we strive for as they move through the levels, but don't fall into the trap! Stretch the youngster for the good of being able to move forward properly in the future.

The second video is balance in motion specialist, Susanne von Dietze working with a para-dressage rider. Balance, the all important goal we all strive for in ourselves and with our horses, is a big focus along with the mechanics of the rider in the rising trot and lastly the topic of our torso's and how we should properly use them in our riding, especially when moving on a curved line.

What a pleasure to watch this talented young mare in her early training!  Watch this video to see how a proper start can create the foundation for a potential Grand Prix competitor.

Christoph Hess

Part 1:  This beautiful young mare shows impressive gaits, and the rider has wonderful timing with her aids.  In the warm up they work on more inside leg and on the shoulder fore.  They do the free walk showing good movement in the shoulder.

Part 2:  Mr. Hess discusses why a "natural" trot, as shown in this quality mare, is so important.  As they move to the canter in a light seat, he asks that the mare opens her frame more.  (Check out her ears!)

Part 3: They work on the flying changes, first making sure that the depart is proper.  With the right preparation the mare shows clean, good changes.  Mr. Hess then reviews her ride.

Susanne von Dietze teaches a terrific lesson on how the balance of the rider, in particular how they use their pelvis, can influence the pace of the horse and the quality of the transitions.  There are many useful tips and exercises to help the rider become more aware of their balance and how small changes in their balance can improve the overall way of going.

Susannevondietze

Part 1:  This session with a para-equestrian begins with a walk on a long rein, allowing the horse to move over his back while stretching towards the hands.  Ms. von Dietze asks the rider to turn in the saddle and think about what happens to her seatbones.  Susanne explains how the upper body position, tension and rotation can influence the horse. They then go to the posting trot and work on where the rider lands and it's contribution to how the horse moves.

Part 2:  While posting the trot, she again has the rider turn her torso in the saddle and notice which way is easier to turn.  This exercise allows the rider to change where her pelvis lands in the saddle and improve her balance.

Part 3: At the canter they explore how turning the torso even a tiny bit can help with the balance of the rider.  The canter left is better by turning slightly to the outside.  To work on canter trot transitions, they first work on changing the speed of her pelvis.

Part 4: They experiment with the body position of the rider and the height of the rise at the posting trot to influence the speed of the horse. As this improves, the down transition from the canter to the trot becomes fluent.

Part 5:  Ms. von Dietze helps the rider with her sitting trot with great exercises to keep her balance.  As the balance of the rider improves, the horse becomes more responsive.

Part 6:  The session concludes with great canter and trot work and more flowing transitions.

This video excites me! It's full of crucial information. Reaction: getting what you want, when to release or not to release, what to do if they overreact...really an issue those with over sensitive horses and those with dull horses need to really understand in order to be successful. Next, super tips for the counter canter and how to deal with the horse that wants to swap leads at this time. Last, he gives a great setup exercise to achieve before you attempt the first flying changes. This covers so many things young horses or novice riders deal with, it's a favorite of mine and i'm excited to bring it to your attention.
